It is with deep sadness that we inform you of the passing of Shirley G. Levine, mother of Darren Levine, and Founding Head of School at Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School – the first school in the U.S. to have Krav Maga integrated into its physical education program.

“Imi Lichtenfeld used say that if KRAV MAGA was going to grow in Israel and throughout the world, it would have to be exported from Los Angeles and the Heschel Day School program.

Her close friendship with Grand Master Imi Lichtenfeld, along with my Father, formed a perfect alliance that set in motion the expansion of KRAV MAGA in the States; and ultimately throughout the world.”

Shirley passed away early yesterday morning. Shirley was the dedicated leader, inspirational visionary and consummate educator who led Heschel Day School from its inception in 1972 until 2003. For 31 years Shirley dedicated her life to the Heschel community, making Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School one of the exemplary Jewish day schools in the country.

Her passion for excellence, her love of children, and her mentorship and friendship will be dearly missed by all she touched. Our thoughts are with her husband, Arnold, sister Lee, children Mark, Darren and Marci, and her 6 grandchildren.

Today, Heschel, Krav Maga Worldwide™, and the entire Krav Maga community, lost an incredible leader, teacher, and friend.

Darren Levine, a 6th-degree black belt, founded the nonprofit Krav Maga Association of America, Inc. at the personal request of Krav Maga Grandmaster Imi Lichtenfeld. Mr. Levine serves as the Chairman of the Board and U.S. Chief Instructor of Krav Maga Worldwide. He was certified as a Krav Maga instructor in 1981 by the Israeli Ministry of Education and the Wingate Institute of Physical Education and Sport in Netanya, Israel. Mr. Levine has taught Krav Maga to thousands civilians and local, state, and federal law enforcement officers, as well as to military special operation and counter-terror units on an official basis, throughout the United States and abroad.

In addition, Darren Levine has served as a Deputy District Attorney for the County of Los Angeles since 1990. As a prosecutor, he was a senior member of the Crimes Against Peace Officers Section (CAPOS), an elite special trials unit tasked with the responsibility of prosecuting the most violent crimes committed against peace officers. In that position for nearly 13 years, he has prosecuted eight cases involving the murders of on duty peace officers and was entrusted with prosecuting some of the most challenging, complex, and high profile cases in the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Currently, he serves as a supervisor in the District Attorney’s Office. He has been recognized by receiving many awards, including the Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney of the Year (2003), the National Association of District Attorneys (co-recipient) of the 2004 Heavy Hitter Award, and was named a Distinguished Alumni of Loyola Law School in 2005. Darren continues to extensively teach Krav Maga throughout the world.

In his dual roles as Krav Maga Chief Instructor and as a Deputy District Attorney, he has dedicated his life to the safety of others.

Kelly Campbell, a 3rd degree black belt, is the highest ranking female instructor in the United States. She is a senior instructor and holds two official titles at Krav Maga Worldwide™; the Director of Instructor Development, and Training Coordinator for the Licensing Division. She is certified in a number of other specialties including; Train the Trainer, Civilian Law Enforcement Instructor, and ASST (Adrenal Stress Scenario Training). She is also a certified km-X™ Instructor (Krav Maga Worldwide™ youth program), and is a single mother of a teenage boy. This combination of expertise and life experience makes her a highly sought after role model for other women.

Matt Romond, the youngest member of Krav Maga Worldwide™’s Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) – the Committee that systematically reviews all of the techniques and teaching methods in the Krav Maga Worldwide™ system – is a 2nd degree Black Belt, and is the Director of km-X™ (Krav Maga Worldwide™ youth program). Matt is also one of a handful of lead licensing instructors who are charged with training and testing other Krav Maga instructors from around the world.
