Yep, in fight class sometimes....
With a toe hold you can break the ankle and possibly injure your opponent's knee. You grab the toes with one hand, then slide the other underneath his ankle, grab your own wrist (of the hand that's holding the toes), then push down on the toes and simultaneously pull up a little with your other arm that's underneath his ankle.
Really hard to describe, better google for some pictures or something. 8)

Yeh, but that ain't krav maga, is it? You could be doing drunken monkey kung fu moves in fight class as well.

I don't think we've ever done drunken monkey kung fu in fight class, although some of the students (and the occasional teacher!) certainly behave like drunken monkeys....
No, strictly speaking the toe hold isn't a Krav move, but we do it in Krav class once in a while, too (not often, just when the teacher is in a good mood).
It may be doable in a street fight, if you happen to find yourself in the right position. You could do a quick motion, break that little sucker, then jump back up and run (and he may not be able to follow you with his twisted ankle). Most of the time, punches would probably be more effective, though.

My instructor said that the toe hold is relatively safe compared to the heel hook. He showed us how to do both, but we aren't supposed to heel hook because its more likely to injure something important.

the toe hold USED to be an an \"unoffical\" move in green belt i believe?

Wow, in a street fight, if I'm reduced to screwing with someone's foot, I'm really in trouble. But ok, I see your point...in a rare chance you're in that predicament type of thing, huh.

Yeah, if it's right there in front of you, why not? But I wouldn't try to take a guy down just to wresle for a toe hold, if I could just kick him in the groin instead.
Don't know if it ever was an unofficial green belt move. Maybe. Not at the time I was taking the green belt, though, but sometimes things are added.
Yes, heel hook is worse. Not surprisingly, it's one of my favorite moves (and about the only thing that might work against some monster twice your weight....)

Oh, I'm sure you can appreciate a scenario where an opponent has full body armor covering his groin (and some sort of crazy weapon for good measure) and only grappling will work. Basically thats what Japanese Jujutsu is- and in the old school variations, the ankle locks are combined with a foot lift to expose the groin (the armor is kind of on a hinge), then a grounded ax kick to the groin. So, you can do both.

Why of course, if anyone could appreciate such a scenario, it would have to be me.
Hmmmm, knights, they are a tricky bunch.... Not sure grappling would be the best solution, wouldn't his toes also be armoured?
I guess if I walked down the street and were suddenly attacked by a knight I'd just run - how fast could he be carrying a few dozen pounds of iron? Of course, he might be on a horse. In that case the toe hold might work. I'd just slap the toe hold on the horse, incapacitating it, then run.
So knights, don't come to my neighborhood, you're going down!!
horses don't have toes, but camels are a different story...
'scuse me, but I'm the resident pervert here. Thanks.

I think it was a green belt move. Something about toe/heel hook going one way tears the exterior ACL and the other way, the interior.
Either way, it's not a place I wanna wind up on the street.
