Boning up on my notes & 2 questions:
1)Ground-fighting-Escape from guard (elbows)
2)Ground-fighting-Kick off from guard
I know I did these, but in the middle of a ditz attack,I'm blanking.
Could I get a bit of a description of these two techniques?thanks

The first one is fairly simple: when you're in the other guy's guard and have established a good base, drive your elbows into the inner part of his thighs to cause pain.
The truth is, you might not need this in a street fight. If he's using a closed guard his groin will be exposed -- strike, tear, pull, etc. instead of the elbow pressure. But the elbow pressure is good to know, and of course it helps when doing grappling only exercises.
The second one is when you are on the bottom and someone else is in your guard. While we show some more grappling-oriented attacks later on, this is the first thing we show because it is instinctive and easy for most people to perform: shift your hips to one side (\"shrimping\" in grappling terms), use your bottom leg to kick at his hip, then use your top leg to kick at his chest or face. There are some details that involve catching his arm with your hand as well, but your instuctor can show you that.
Note: if he is working hard to stay close, this technique is not immediately available. Slap, elbow, scratch, claw, tear at his face and head to help create a little distance, then try it.

Im not a big fan of elbows in the thighs, but in all honosty, I dont think opening someone's guard in a fight is all that difficult. For one, how many people are you fighting that are BJJ or even know what a guard is?
If they've got a closed guard, opening it up in grappling is one thing, but a few shots to the face will open that up nice and quick in a fight (unless he wants to hold on and get pounded).

Make sure to train with awareness to the environment as well. While in the guard, look for objecs within arms reach that you can use as weapons, as a shield, or as a distraction that may open his guard (i.e., rocks, shoes, pencils, keys, snow, etc.)
A fun way to train awareness is to drill the technique with focus mitts, tombstones, gloves, and shoes in the general periphery. Both partners are eligible to pick up the objects in order to escape or to bludgeon the bottom man.

With the popularity of MMA it won't be very uncommon to run into someone who actually knows what there doing. Even without formal training, you get someone who watches 2-3 UFC's and they will learn what a guard is.

But are they going to want to be in the bottom position in a street fight? Unless they are really good?

Well if they are trained they might. More and more people are doing jiu jitsu cause the MMA popularity, And alot are young, stupid, and just waiting for the excuse to show off in front of there buddies by putting you in a triangle.

i agree with a lot of what is being said here.
The thing I have to stress is what john first said... Make sure you have a good base.
ANYONE with a good guard (closed or open) is going to keep your head down and control a single arm. I can not stress how hard it can be to posture properly if someone knows what they are doing.
If you can posture, your fine. If you can't, you are open to EVERYTHING.
Yes, slap, scratch, do what you can... but... it's just not that easy. We train it... with goggles/headgear/mouthpiece on... you'd be SURPRIZED how much control can be achieved by someone on bottom...
My point is... the REAL work is in posturing... and if the posturing wasn't hard, then you weren't training to fight a good BJJ guy...

One of the best ways to posture up that we're taught at the gracie school is to straighten both arms, grab a handful of shirt and 1 fist right below the sternum and the other right below the belly button... If the person on the bottom tries to pull you in, it just puts more force into their stomach region. Again, if they are a skilled BJJ guy, it won't matter.

There are several simple ways to posture. What's important (IMO) is that they are trained as \"alive\" as possible with as much stress as possible with a resisiting opponent.
I'm not really going to get into the argument of \"if they are a skilled BJJ guy, it won't matter\" because i feel i AM a skilled BJJ guy and i will be the first to say that there are a TON of things that can make a huge difference. So i will simply respect your opinion instead of discussing a subject that has been covered once... or twice... maaayyybbbeeee alittle more.

Closed guard in the street?
ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah right!!!! Hopefully you would be out with a few of your buddies and they would stomp the hell out of the guy who is \"working his technique\". Or better yet hopefully you would put your thumbs in is eyes or bite his nose off!

i don't find it wise to underestimate anyone. Remember many people prefer to use a triangle from mount, not guard. Being on the bottom of anyone is no joke.

And hopefully they WON'T have a few of their buddies... or that they won't bite your nose off or put their thumbs in your eyes...
Point being we need to place an emphasis on posturing to alleviate any chance of being injured, and expedite our escape. If our goal is to get away we can not think we are in a good position when someone is holding us on the ground, even if they are underneth us. They are still keeping us from running.
While we could very well get lucky, i'm training for the times i'm not so lucky. I agree, do what you can to posture. But i do not feel there is ZERO threat... if i did i wouldn't stress getting to your feet ASAP.
