What kind of seminar did you guys have?
mara_jade
01-12-2008, 03:36 PM
It wasn't a seminar on specific moves. He demonstrated some great tricks and kick butt drills to deal with stress. One was in pairs, one would SUPER slowly do certain punches and other calls the punches out. You learn how to know to what's coming before the punch EVER gets close to you. It was so friggin simple and now I can see how to react betterthumbsup
Another was groups of 3. One with focus mitts, another throwing punches while another was to the side. The side person would slightly raise one of their arms while the puncher had to call out which arm moved. For the advanced people, the side person would raise their arm slightly as if reaching for a weapon. That same set of three, instead of straight punches, the mitt person called out punch combos and the puncher had to do the correct combo BESIDES call out what arm the third person was moving.
The last part of the seminar was going under stress with multiple attackers going at you (1 choking, and 2 with banana bags).
I know there were other things, but my mind's gone blank at the moment, sorry. I'll post more when I remember.
Now hubby and I UNDERSTAND why everyone gets all excited about John.thumbsup

It’s a joke MJ… GK is very fond of training with John.. I meant she would be jealous

Hehehe, I was reading this and yeah, of course, got all jealous but thought maybe I better not mention it so I wouldn't freak out CJ'sDad. But since he's already freakin', no reason to hold back. :):
So, yeah, damn, this sucks, when is John going to come back to teach us at the NTC? Lucky mara, but come on, we're all suffering from neglect. And can we have him back on the forum as well, since none of the other high-level Krav guys seem to have much interest in it anyway? Who will answer our most intricate Krav-related questions? Who's got the eloquence?
Strange, last time I talked to John about the forum he pretty much said he thought he couldn't let me back on, because he believed he would probably just have to delete me again in another six months. Now it's six months later and HE's off the forum and I'm still on? That's just weird...

Hey I tried GK - I told the man we missed him around here. He just gave me a little smile. I'd like to think he at least LURKS every once in awhile.:dunno:. I can't blame him if he can't, with him travelling all over and working on the new KM books. Bet his family misses him more.
Besides, I gotta give the high five to the instructors I've started seeing around here lately. John can't be here right now but I'm glad to see the others stepping up to offer their knowledge along with all the students. I definitely appreciate it. http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/h/highfive.gif

I haven't visited or posted since mid '06, but I must tell all that MJ was really amped up at the training session with John Whitman today. By the way, this session was a freebee open to all San Antonio KM students--just another benefit of training at a great facility.
John was instructing on reaction and the efficacy of being the aggressor when one feels his/her life might be in danger. He was quickly reminded that in Texas, shooting is an appropriate response when one's life is in danger.

Welcome back to the forum!:wav:
Alamo is one of our elder members and I say that with all respect. I'd hate to be on his bad sidethumbsup

Wow - put me down as being jealous, MJ!
I sure hope that I'll get to attend a seminar taught by Mr. Whitman some day. Everyone that I know who's ever trained with him has said how great an experience it is.

I was so happy when I found out Steve:D:. I saw something about J Whitman workshop and I assumed it was for Instructors. I found out there was a freebie student one, hubby and I were the 3rd and 4th people to sign up.
Y'all talk so highly of him and now we TOTALLY UNDERSTAND WHYthumbsup Now just gotta see about getting in on the one with Darren in Aprilhttp://ide.li/modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif

So mara, did you tell him you are the Welcoming Committee now? What did he think about that? What kind of smile was it? Mysterious? Nostalgic? :):
Damn, this could have been perfect. You should have used all of your famous welcoming skills to invite him back. Or you could have just told him GK's outta control again and we really need him to fix it. Hell, he'd already be posting again. thumbsup

Girl, I didn't get the chance - there were bunches of people waiting behind me to have their books autographed. I was lucky to get a few pictures. Both mine and hubby's hands were shaking after the seminar so that explains my blurry picture up there.
Not really sure about his smile - I was wondering how he'd react when I said we missed him on the forum. Shoot, maybe I should've mentioned you - betcha that would've gotten a reactionrofl2

Yeah I bet it woud've!!! http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/dvv/anger.gif rofl2
So, were your hands shaking from excitement to meet him, or just the tough class you had just taken?
Anyway, next time you see him just ambush him, I bet you'll be persuasive!
Good to hear there were so many people wanting to get the book autographed. Maybe he'll go on a book tour when the next one is coming out.

With that seminar, I hadn't punched like that in a LONG time. I was proud - despite no wraps on, my hands came out ok except for some redness on a few knuckles and 1 scratch.:D:
The only way I'll ever get to train with John again is if he comes down this way again. The chances of going to LA (when he's back there) are pretty slim.
So, what's training with Darren like?
Giant Killer
01-13-2008, 07:07 PM
Well, I guess you'll see. What kind of seminar will it be?

All I know is it's about Use of Force. It's kinda early right now to ask for details (I checked awhile back).
Giant Killer
01-13-2008, 07:14 PM
Sounds more like a police seminar. Will it be open to students? I'm sure you'll have fun with that one, too and you'll be able to get Darren to autograph the book as well! :):

Ok, I found my email from Jeanine. It' supposed to be a lecture and seminar. She mentioned 'there may be a LE only course in conjunction with the lecture and seminar, but there will be an open course as well.'
She told me Jon Pascal would be one to ask about Use of Force, and I totally forgot about that. I can't remember if I've seen him here:dunno:
Giant Killer
01-13-2008, 07:25 PM
Jon Pascal heads the force training devision, although maybe he's doing something else now (from what was mentioned in that statement a while back)? I don't think he posts here.
Anyway, meeting Darren will be fun for sure, no matter what kind of class it is going to be.

Aw balogney - you mean I'm gonna be in for a serious beating, rightrofl2. There's always the possibility of bumps, bruises, 'holy crap' injuries, etc doing this. I'd rather get all of that in training than get my butt beat out in the streetthumbsup

I just saw my center's got some video of John giving our instructors a training session. I'm also proud to say John tested our instructors and we now have FOUR Level 4 instructors:woohoo:
www.911kravmaga.com
Just scroll down a few pages and look for the 2nd video.
Oh I got curious and googled John. Did he REALLY write Star Wars books for kids?? That's so cool if it's truethumbsup

Yeah, he wrote tons of books. You're the Star Wars junkie, you should get those. I think they still sell them over Amazon. Just type in his name and it lists all of his books. I got some of his recent "24" novels (after the TV show). They're pretty good and have names of some KM instructors in there as well as KM related places (one time Jack Bauer has to look for a bomb at Olympic and Colby, the intersection where the NTC is located). thumbsup I think John is writing another one that should come out soon.
Are the videos on youtube as well by any chance? I may not be able to load the other link (no high speed).

So is the link to the video located where it says "Instructors pass LV4 test"? If I click on that picture, it becomes bigger, but there doesn't seem to be a video there. Maybe it's further down?
