MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A Hofstra University student being held in a headlock at gunpoint by an intruder was accidently shot and killed by a police officer who had responded to the home invasion at an off-campus home, police said Saturday.
Junior public relations major Andrea Rebello was shot once in the head early Friday morning by an officer who opened fire after the masked intruder pointed a gun at the officer while holding the 21-year-old student, Nassau County homicide squad Lt. John Azzata said.
In a tense confrontation with the officer, gunman Dalton Smith "menaces our police officer, points his gun at the police officer," Azzata said. The officer opened fire, killing Smith and his hostage.
Azzata said the Nassau County police officer fired eight shots at Smith, who police described as having an "extensive" criminal background. Smith was hit seven times and died. Rebello was shot once in the head.
"He kept saying, 'I'm going to kill her,' and then he pointed the gun at the police officer," Azzata said.
A loaded 9 mm handgun with a serial number scratched off was found at the scene, police said.
Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said he had traveled to Rebello's Tarrytown, N.Y., home to explain to Rebello's parents what happened.
"I felt obligated as a police commissioner and as a parent to inform them as soon as all the forensic results were completed," Dale said.
The veteran police officer, who was not identified, has about 12 years of experience on the Nassau County police force and previously spent several years as a New York City police officer, Dale said.
The officer is currently out on sick leave. He will be the focus of an internal police investigation once the criminal investigation is completed, which is standard police procedure in any officer-involved shooting, the commissioner said.
Earlier Saturday, police announced that Smith, 30, had been wanted on a parole violation related to a first-degree robbery conviction and had an arrest history dating back nearly 15 years.
The shooting came just days before the school's commencement ceremonies, which are scheduled to take place Sunday.
A university spokeswoman said students will be handed white ribbons to wear in memory of Rebello. The shooting, which took place just steps from campus, has cast a pall over the university community as it geared up for commencement on Sunday.
"Today is the last day of finals and this should be a happy day on campus; but it's not," Hofstra freshman Scott Aharoni of Great Neck, said Friday as he passed through the area rife with yellow crime-scene tape. "It's really sad."
Rebello was in the two-story home with her twin sister Jessica, a third woman and a man when Smith, wearing a ski mask, walked into the house through an open front door, Azzata said. Smith demanded valuables and was told they were upstairs, Azzata said.
Smith, apparently unsatisfied with the valuables upstairs, asked if any of the four had a bank account and could withdraw money, Azzata said. The intruder then allowed the unidentified woman to leave and collect money from an ATM, telling her she had only eight minutes to come back with cash before he killed one of her friends, Azzata said.
The woman left for the bank and called 911, according to Azzata.
Minutes later, two police officers arrived at the home and found Rebello's twin sister Jessica running out of the front door and the male guest hiding behind a couch on the first floor, Azzata said.
One of the officers entered the home and encountered Smith holding onto Rebello in a headlock, coming down the stairs, Azzata said. Smith pulled Rebello closer and started moving backward toward a rear door of the house, pointing the gun at her head before eventually threatening the officer, Azzata said.
Rebello's family declined comment Saturday.
The Rev. Osvaldo Franklin, who gave Rebello and her sister Jessica their first communions, on Saturday night told The Associated Press their mother, Nella, couldn't even speak to him earlier in the day.
"She was so devastated," said Franklin. "She's just crying. We have to pray for Andrea, to pray for Jessica because she needs help."
Franklin said a funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., and will be in Portuguese.
"The family's a very good family, they have very good values," he said. "I gave them first communion to Andrea and Jessica and they started to help me in the mass for many years. They are a very good, very devoted family."

So sad on all accounts. It just goes to show that you never know when something like this will happen and why we train gun defenses... I always hear people asking why do we train gun defenses so often at level 3 and up, saying "I'll never be in this type situation." If what I'm reading is correct this may be the situation that occurred:

There seems to be only two options for KM in Lansing and I was hoping someone on these forums might be able to share their thoughts. Or at least offer tips on how to assess whether the instructors are teaching true Krav Maga.

The first option is Victory Martial Arts. There are a ton of negative reviews for their Orlando location, but almost no reference to their Lansing KM instruction on their website or on any review sites. They offer this groupon a lot
which makes me even more skeptical that they are offering a quality program.

Spartan Krav Maga seems to be fairly new in the area, but even the small amount of info and pictures on their website and facebook page make me think they may be a more credible route to actual KM training.

I've sent e-mails to both businesses asking about their instructors and what qualifications they have to teach KM. I'll try to come back and update once I receive responses.

I'd appreciate any info or thoughts on these locations or if there are other ones nearby you recommend (I also frequent Kalamazoo and I'd really rather not drive to Detroit though). Thanks!

I had originally posted this in the General Forum but realized that it may be better here :D:.

Hello all, first time posting here on the forums but I've spent plenty of times reading over various things here and have found the community here quite intelligent and helpful when other members have questions.

That being said, I have a question of my own that I was hoping to get some answers for. I have been taking Krav Maga for a bit over a year now with about 175 hours of total training between Level 1,2, all level and L2/3 classes (and am hoping to officially be level 3 next month) and I'm yet to really see any real joint break techniques outside of "step to the side and kick the side of the opponent's knee" and Cavaliers.

When I began looking into Krav Maga before I signed up for it last year, many sources that I read/saw had indicated that the system contained a fair number of joint break techniques (although not nearly as much as Jiu Jitsu) and things like arm bars/wrist locks. But in talking to some instructors and having read Complete Krav Maga (http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Krav-...lete+krav+Maga) cover to cover, I haven't seen or heard much about joint breaks existing at Krav maga Worldwide (I take Krav Maga at the Owings Mills Maryland location).

The long and short of this post is, do joint break techniques outside of Cavaliers exist in Krav Maga Worldwide? Regardless of the answer, it is an AMAZING system that I plan to keep progressing through. I do like the simplicity of the system and agree that joint breaks can be a bit on the fancier side, however it would be nice to have them in the toolbox if the opportunity and need would arise.

Thanks ahead of time!

What do you think about http://38.de/2d6 ? Is it worth a try or not. Any experiences so far with online courses?
I've been teaching martial arts since 1996 when I got my black belt in Isian Kai Tae Kwon Do ( Under Sensei Ed Smith). Since then I have been a defensive tactics instructor in two disciplines (PPCT and SSGT)and have training in multiple martial arts systems including Filipino martial arts, American Freestyle Karate( Under Shidoshi Eddie Thibodeaux) , and MMA grappling (under Allen Gray). I currently teach self defense and ground defense and I am the primary conditioning coach at the Eunice Black Belt academy ( Shidoshi Thibodeaux's school). I have come to this forum to sponge up any information I can get on krav Maga!! Thanks again. God bless!!!!

Hello guys/girls. I've been watching Krav Maga videos for the last year or so and am interested in starting training. I have a wrestling background and have good innate fighting instincts, so I believe I would be a quick learner. I live in the Hollywood, CA, area and am curious if anyone knows of any schools around here. I know there are schools in Sherman Oaks and West LA, but was hoping to see if I could find one closer as with LA traffic those could potentially be fairly long commutes. Let me know if you know of any. Thanks in advance, guys!

Hi all, new to the forums and to Krav in general.

I am overweight and out of shape, and went to my first class last night.

The warmup kicked my ass, I actually didn't finish all of the exercises and had to dumb some of them down (turning sit-ups to crunches, etc.). Technique portion also exposed just how inflexible and exhausted I was.

All that being said, I am going back and will continue to go back, but I have a few concerns.

First, I didn't have a partner when I went to my first class, so I got paired up with a more experienced person who was actually very helpful and patient. That being said, should I just keep asking the instructor for a partner when the time comes to pair up, or should I do something else?

Second, while I am giving it my all when training with my partner, I know that I am not giving him a fantastic show (even though I do what I can to make sure he gets the training he needs). I kind of feel bad that I am limiting the efficacy of someone else's workout. Is there anything I can do here?

Thanks all, looking forward to having these issues disappear over the next few months, but I know I will be plagued with them for now.
