Default Hello All

Just wanted to say hi to everyone on the board. Im fairly new to Krav Maga i've been training for the past 4 weeks. I love the intensity and the great self defense I get in class. I look forward to posting on here in the future. I do have one quick question for you all. After lots of bag work and hitting the punch shield in class my tendon in my forearm starts throbbing and hurting real bad. I have taken a week off from class to let it heal so I wont do any further damage to my tendons. My question is has anyone had this problem in here, and what did you do too fix it. I have been icing it down 3 times a day and resting it. I just hope this isnt a re-occuring problem. Thanks alot for your help.

Chris

Hi Chris, and welcome!

I am no expert in this area but if it is the punching that is causing your arm pain my guess would be your punching form may be a little off. If your wrist and arms are not in proper position to spread the force from the impact through your arm to your body, it will cause isolated areas to absorb the majority of the force and will make that area sore. If you aren't wearing wraps that might be helpful too. I'm sure Ryan and some of the other instructors here on the board could provide a lot more accurate and helpful info. Good luck!

Also, Chris may have something pre-existing, like tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Chris, do you wear handwraps under your gloves? I'm not a big fan of them myself, but probably would sport them if I felt chronic lower-arm pain.

Default Wraps

Thanks guys for your replies. I just use grappling gloves right now, but I do have a pair of wrist wraps that im gonna start wearing. It starts hurting after I beat the crap out of the punch shield for about a minute straight. I have my wrist turned when I punch so I don't hurt them.(vertical not horizontal) I believe my form is correct I think it may be just a strength issue with my tendons. Im gonna still ice it down and do forearm work in the gym to try and strengthen them. Thank you all for your help.

You should see an orthopedist so they can evaluate the severity of the problem and pinpoint the exact cause.

Try doing open hand/palm heel strikes instead of a fist. This isnt boxing and your not gonna have gloves on the streets.

You could also do push ups on your knuckles to strengthen your wrist once you feel better.

It's great for toughening up the knuckles, too. I could punch stuff now that used to make my crinch like a sissyboy back before I started doing knuckle push ups.
