Thoughts on my level 1 test

    – I’ve been to probably 400 workshops in my professional life…today’s was the ONLY one to leave me bruised and tired.

    – My partner had boxing gloves on for all the punching combatives and the inside defense during the workshop. All I can say is the “cuff” part of boxing gloves leave really interesting bruises on one’s forearms.:box:

    – Since I have only trained for 3 months, once per week I wasn’t concerned my cardio wouldn’t be good enough….I was right. I was DYING!!!!!!

    – Taking a level test with a torn muscle in your shoulder isn’t the wisest decision I’ve ever made.

    – Note to whomever thought of doing 360 defense and inside defense at the same time without pads……I’m coming for you.

    – When we finally finished, and I had made it through….It was a HUGE sense of accomplishment. There were about 5 times during the test where only my refusal to quit kept me going…..IT WAS FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!thumbsup

    – I have to wait to find out if I passed?!?!?!?!?!? ARRGGHHHHH:tantrum:

    – I can hardly wait until my level 2 test!

Now, I’m going to go soak my whole body in tub of ice so that I can hopefully walk tomorrow.

    Good news!!!!!

    1. Almost all my body parts work today…..with the exception of 1 leg and my shoulder I’m almost good to go.

    2. I passed.

:dunno: I’d flunk ya because your cardio sucked and you only had 12 classes under your belt. How good could you be? I think even mcdojos require more than thatrofl2

Actually I’m teasing you a bit Old Grappler. Truthfully congratulations on going thru the test. I’m impressed. I really hope you passthumbsup

However, I always have a point to my posts and my comments are not personally directed at you. More an observation on the whole. People are in such a hurry in this stuff(m/a’s, RBSD) to advance that they miss the base of a system. In everything we do we must master the fundamentals., Which takes repitition and time. at some point in our training we usually have to go back and clean up the crap we blitzed thru. Its easier to hone the fundamentals in the beginning then to correct later.

And even cardio is a part of the fundamentels because the first thing that happens when you tire is we start to operate outta the path of least resistence. Which usually means leaving the lower case out and arm punching. This is a bad habit as power is generated from the ground up. Or better yet the body working as a unit which in the end will be more efficient. At the beginning it takes more effort to train though, thus needed more groundwork to lay.

Having seen the Level one cirricullum 12 classes doesn’t seem like the path to mastery. Its the things we don’t even know we don’t know that gets us in trouble. Though I’m sure there is a push to get people thru level 1 to make room for new students

That’s a fair enough point. Keep in mind, though, not everyone learns or progresses at the same pace, and prior experience will also play into the rate of progresssion. I do agree that 12 weeks isn’t enough to acheive Mastery of all the level 1 components. Which is why I fully intend on continuing to take level 1 classes while I am taking level two, as well.

I can’t speak for others, but for me the eagerness to get through this level was two things….1. Level 2 opens a lot of additional training opportunities obviously with many more techniques to keep the training fresh (and once my instructor feels I’m ready, Fight Class). 2. It was very important that I prensented myself a challenge that would take my whole mind and body working together to accomplish. That is not to say that if I would have waited another 12 weeks that the test wouldn’t have been challenging…..but the process I went through Saturday confirmed that I still have some traits that I hadn’t needed to use in a long time, and it’s nice to know I can still call on them when needed.

As I said Congratulations on the whole thing. And I deep down mean it. I am in no way trying to denigrate your accomplishment in anyway. I know it must seem that way, but its not my intention. Though I’m linking to your thread it is not directed to you. My comments are more on the whole than an individual. I hope you can accept that and my apology if your offended.

I will address one correction to your reply, if you will. You did not take krav for 12 weeks… you took 12 classes in 12 weeks…or 12 hours, unless I misread “one day a week for 12 weeks” that to me is a big difference. I that takes time and reps. But none of this matters really because thats not my issue

My thing is that the fundamentals. The base that people are going to build their entire defense strategy on is just blitzed thru. I can understand if a guy has a solid boxing background having an easier time. But rushing thru the beginning stages is not in your best interest. Until you can do it “Correctly” over and over again under stress…You can’t do it. And great instructors know that as the flaws will come up later under stress and will be harder to correct. I simply throwing out a speed bump for the mentality that tries to speed thru advancement, not dampen enthusiasm

Take care I look forward to your post that you passedfthumbsup

    Unspatbl1,
First of all, you’re out of place. If you want to talk about how it’s not okay for a person to finish level 1 in 12 hours – don’t do it on a thread posted by a person that is so proud of doing so and worked really hard to achieve something he loves. Eventhough you apologized, I still feel like you should have thought about it before your post which was untactful and out of place.

That being said, I do understand your complaint but must disagree. Krav Maga is a principle driven system and most of level 1 is just about some combatives, some chockes and a lot of aggression. In any case of a real physical conflict, speed, aggressivenes, never letting down, and hitting first can be as crucial as any other tehcnique or ability.

Krav Maga is designed to train people quickly and in a dirty way. If Mr. Grappler did so in 12 hours then he has done it in more than most combat soldiers I know which do way more in real conflicts, everyday, with WAY less KM training. So plz, you can be as technical, accurate, and professional in your own skills and I do not doubt your ability – but if presented with a person trained with raw aggressiveness, you might still be overwhelmed. Do not underestimate anyone.

To take 30-40 classes of left/right punches and knees and some choke defenses is a bad exaggeration anyways!!!

Re: Level 1 Test was Today!!!

Sorry you feel that way and decided to tell me what and where my place is. Oh well. I’ll call you first to ask permission and whats appropriate for me to comment on and where. I don’t know what I did before you came here

i went to great lengths to explain my POV and to still be encoouraging.

And by your analogy maybe a guy with a TKd black belt that hasn’t trained in 10 years could take a 12 hour course and be an instructor and should start at level 5. Maybe thats krav, but that mentality posted on forum is what leads detractors to label the krav here as watered down. In over 1000 posts here, I’ve never let that mentality go unchecked. .But you know what…Why should I give a **** about the preception of the system or the mentality of its students, it really isn’t my place…. from now on I won’t comment.

Students learn faster and better by looking at the journey not the technique collecting. People like collecting belts and levels but the truth is its not the quanity that makes the difference its the depth. Depth comes from time and reps to internalze it. Until its internalized its not there when you need it. As a student you then have to spend alot of time correcting bad habits. It is in the students best interest to really hone the beginning material in anything, but most rush thru it to get to the good crap. Pointing this out to an enthusiastic proud student is as important as pointing it out to the frustrated confused one. If you master the fundamentals of learning, regardless of what it is, you can learn to do anything fairly quickly because you’ll put the time in to learn it correctly in the first place. If you don’t get what and why I took the time to post I understand, but someone will read it and get it and it will help them.

The military and the civilian here have very different ROE’s. And the civilian needs the empty hands skills more. If it was the other way around you’d spend a hell of a lot more time training krav. Besides which combat conditioning in the military is an intensive chunk of training time on a military training schedule. Krav factors that into their agenda

Underestimating anyone is not a trait I have.

The End..Take it for what its worth

Congratulations Old Grappler, first of all.

Secondly, I felt that unstpabl1 was joking (to some degree) and points out that most of the time it does take longer. Not really a negative, but more constructive criticism for others and what they should expect. Old Grappler passing after 12 classes is an accomplishment and Unstpabl1 says more than once that he is not taking anything away from what he did.

Again, this is my opinion. thumbsup

    Congrats!

I assume you are in IKMF(?). Don’t they start out at zero as opposed to the KMWW that starts out at level one?

No, I’m in KMWW…I was taking my test to allow me to begin adding level 2 training to my schedule.

…and it’s all good, Mike.thumbsup I understand your point, and certainly didn’t take it as a personal shot. The final thing I would say on the subject is that while I had 12 classes in 12 weeks, I also spent a pretty fair amount of time with my Complete Krav book, Bas’ CDs, and my heavy bag on my own to supplement my classes as well. It was a solid 12 weeks of study.

    Good job Old Grappler!

Last Wednesday I completed my 12th class. However I do not feel I’m ready to take my test yet. I feel that I have some bad habits that need to be addressed. I can see where Old Grappler took the initiative to train outside on his own where he could work on his form and build up and improve his technique. I applaud you for working on your own and polishing your skills. .
