    Woo my first real post!

So this is me on the left constantly at the moment: :box2:

This is my third fight class, and I’m really getting sick of getting totally man-handled every round. It’s definitely a new experience for me, and is exactly why I enjoy Krav over a more “theory-based” self-defense system, but I walk away thoroughly depressed and feeling like the only hits I got in were ones my opponents let me get in because they feel sorry for me.

My problem seems to be that I get totally confused in-the-moment, “Uh oh, Should I be looking for punches? Where can I go from here? How’s my gate-stepping? Where can I load up my punch, and where will I step then?”, about a million thoughts like this running through my mind.

I feel like I’m learning, but WOW, for being such a little guy, I feel incredibly SLOW, the big guys are dancing around me! We are only allowed one fight class per week at my school, what should I do to get myself up-to-par quicker? How might I train on my own, for example learning bobbing and weaving? Or should I just take another route (maybe start going to heavy bag classes like crazy?)

Too long, didn’t read version: I suck at fight class, I get all confused in the moment, tired of feeling like the bottom of the class, what should I do?

EDIT: ALSO I forgot, what headgear brands do you use? I tried an everlast MMA style one, and it SUCKS!! One punch and it slides like 180 degrees around my head, and I’m blind!

Yeah that’d make sense.. Unfortunately the budget is rather tight after Krav, I really can’t afford another monthly payment. :(:

Of course, my year contract at Krav is nearing it’s end… Would you think taking some time off from Krav and switching to a boxing gym for a bit would help? I’d hate to do it, but I feel so under-equipped.

Great suggestion. I don’t take Krav, but I plan to at some point…mainly for practical self-defense and the necessary mindset. Nevertheless, boxing is great for learning form, sparring, and the “science” of ring fighting. While not all of it will translate to the street, it surely won’t hurt anything. Getting your butt kicked is a fantastic way to learn.

fiend, what are your training goals? Are you looking to box or defend yourself? Do you have an interest in sport training or self defense? Are you getting fight training at your school, or are you just in a sparring class?

Maybe try practicing a little shadow striking at home in front of a mirror? Practice your 360 defense and inside defense and try to incorporate that into your shadow striking. Try to stay light on your feet and be ready to move. Try to punch in combinations and look for an opening to counter punch when someone throws a punch at you. Keep your chin tucked and eyes on your opponent at all times.

If you have a short reach try to learn how to close the distance effectively and maybe try something called a ìsuperman punchî and surprise your opponents with it:

    http://www.expertvillage.com/video/16056_kickboxing-technique-superman-punch.htm

You will be surprised how much better you get with a little more experience and practice. Hang in there.

BTW the head gear should be cinched quite tight to keep it from moving.

don’t know who the guy is in the video referenced above…but he is really not explaining it right. Its not a technique to do when the guy is dazed… if he is dazed, why wouldn’t you just throw a straight right and knock him out! why would you jump in the air and do some flashy punch.

Superman punch comes after a setup. the setup is either a front kick or a round kick with the back leg. Once you’ve landed the kick and you see that the oppenent is lowering his hand to counter/block your kick, that’s when you use the Superman punch. Because the raising of the knee/leg looks like a front kick/round kick, the oppenent lowers their hand….than BANG! you get him with your right. You are kicking your leg back fast and strong because that is the way you get power on this punch since you don’t have that foot on the floor to drive power from the ground.

Will it work without the setup? sure..maybe. should you know why and how you should use the technique… YES!

Wow! Thanks for all the responses that fast!

To clarify, my class is what they call “Intro to Fight Class”, we’ve been focusing somewhat more on boxing technique (gate step, bob/weave after punches, slips, etc) thus far and every week incorporating a new aspect (straight punches, then this week was hooks and straight, soon they’ll add uppercuts, then various kicks, etc). The end of every class concludes with a series of short rounds with various classmates (3 minute rounds approximately).

This class is more of a “boxing/mma” class I suppose. Typically I am in Krav level 2 classes at the moment, which are more self-defense geared.

My goals thus far have been focused on real-world self-defense. However, as I’ve progressed, I’ve found it hard to stay away from the competitive side, so a secondary goal would be to gain some skill in boxing/mma.

Actually, I think this might also be part of my problem. The usual Krav class runs like “go go go! Punch punch punch!”, this one is more like “hey, slow it down, lets think and dodge” and we run at ~50% speed/power, emphasis on good technique.

As for the headgear, mine has a chin guard, but no chin strap! I think getting one with a chin strap should solve this. Bummer to be out 30 bucks on it though.

HA I like the superman punch.. we’re limited on what we can do, but I may try sneaking this one in a couple times if I can get it down. An instructor gave me a similar idea where you kick out like a roundkick, but bring it in and front kick instead.

Speaking of fakes, I’m a sucker for them! Trying to read the body and not the face/hands, but I always find myself flinching! I’m assuming this will come with time, also maybe getting the right headgear will let me see things coming better.

This is helping just reading some ideas, feeling more pumped already. Definitely gonna be shadowboxing like crazy in my spare time.

    Fiend –

One thing that may help is working hard on lateral movement. As Ryan likes to say, if you stand in front of a guy, you’re fighting the whole man. Move quickly to the dead side and now you’re fighting half the man.

This is also an opportunity to work on putting a couple of combatives together in a combination. (BTW – this is something that has finally helped me get better in a fight class sparring scenario). Decide on throwing a front kick to a vertical target, putting the foot down in front and throwing several punches / elbows right behind it. The trouble with sparring comes in closing in – you’re in range as you close that reactionary gap (the 4 – 6 feet between you and your opponent).

I’m often concerned that sparring can ingrain bad habits. In this situation, it sounds as if you can gain some big benefit from training to be aggressive at times. Be aggressive – or be a target.

Good luck to you. As far as boxing class goes, I’d say stick with Krav Maga and try to get some pad work in every chance that you can. Use the Bas Rutten workout tapes and drill the combos into your head. Commit to throwing some of them, no matter what.

Just a quick note…using inside defenses and 360s for “fighting” in the context given here will get you hammered.

Like a lot of things, you have to think about what you’re doing in order learn it, but you will only get really good at it when you start being able to do it w/o too much thought.

For a lot of the sparring, you have to live in the now, and a few seconds in the future. If you’re constantly worring about what happened in the past, or planning too far into the future, you’ll get thumped. If you get hit, don’t worry about that, just move on to the next attack. Also, relax. If you get hit, you won’t burst into flames.

This was only your third sparing class. How good were at KM in your third L1 class? A lot of the guys who you’re fighting probably already have experience. So, don’t worry about it, the skills will come.

As for headgear, I use this:

    http://www.mmawarehouse.com/FightGear-Air-Max-Training-Headgear-p/csi-1085.htm

It stays on, and in place, pretty well. I’ve been happy with it so far.

Headgear: yes that Everlast is horrible, try the RevGear ones with grip padding inside that makes world of difference specially if you heavy sweat.

Well in that case, the answer is pretty clear…just keep sparring. Combos, hooks, uppercuts and everything else take a while to put together effectively. Just be patient, and you will eventually be able to dish it out pretty good. Until then, feeling a bit overwhelmed is just part of the process.

Ok, giving fight advice on the internet is likely not the greatest of ideas, but let’s just look at one concept that may help. Practice “incidental defenses”. In other words, be a hard target, not by actively defending, but through head movement, footwork, and high covers. These tactics will let you focus more on your offense (since no one wins by defense.) Don’t wait for openings, create them.

    Good luck.
