Hi
I am a newbie here. I am very interested to study Krav Maga but some of my friends are convincing me to study the art of Pekiti Tirsia Kali.
I have no idea with the Pekiti Tirsia Kali except what i see in them during they practice it is that they use sticks, knives, kubotans, and even empty hands. They are too fast.
If i study Krav, and reached to same level with their art, will i defeat or even out my friends?
Its like Jason Bourne (Pekiti Tirsia Kali) vs. Jack Bauer (Krav Maga) :combat:

Try both and decide whic one suits your preferances.

Agree with Dirty Harry – see which matches better with what you are looking for…

1. You can train PT with your friends – after all, they are your friends. 2. You can train something else and then crosstrain with your friends.

It only looks that way because you’re not used to seeing it. First time I saw Kali, Guro Dan and (IIRC) Chris Kent and Cass Magda performed a demo at my high school Way back when – sparks flying off machetes up and down the bleachers – and I felt the same way you did, I couldn’t follow it.

No way to tell. You’re really comparing apples and moon rocks here. There is no “same level” and the results of any kind of competition between you and your friends would not mean anything with respect to comparing PT and KM.

What, no Chuck? Wait until he finds out how you just disrespected him…
Think about Why you want to train and do some research on your choices before you decide…June 5, 2009 at 5:50 pm #76008leejam99MemberRe: Krav Maga vs. Pekiti Tirsia Kali
I love kali but you should not think that you can execute what you do in the flow drills in a real life situations. If you watch the Dog brothers (you can google and find tons of videos), when they spar full out, you won’t see many if any trapping or “flow” type of movements you see when you practice stick/knife drills. Its too much of a complex motor skill. You will however definitely get better at using sticks and knives though..especially being able to use your foot work while using a weapon.

My plan is that once I have reached a certain level of training in Krav Maga, I will start training in Kali (not quitting Krav Maga while doing that sir, not at all).
I can definitely see the advantage of knowing both systems.

Both arts attempt to make use of the body’s natural reactions more so than some other arts, but they emphasize different elements (i.e. krav- fright reaction stance and 360 defense, pekiti tirsia- emphasizing chopping rather than thrusting to destroy things). Pekiti tirsia is a very well thought out system.

I don’t think Dog Brothers should be the only example you look for in kali they have in my opinion, to much focus on ground & MMA type application (with sticks). KM and PTK and other “fight for your life/military systems” don’t really want you on the ground too long. There are risks of being jumped, beaten, stabbed, injured or even shot by secondary threats.
KM teaches you knife defenses but what do you do when you are left there holding the knife and people are still coming at you with more knives and an intent to kill you….
PTK does work under pressure. It is battle tested and works for the FMR fighting terrorist muslims.
Here’s FMR training PTK.

There are many groups of Kali and PTK practitioners to learn from. Differences do exist between groups. ie, application; primary focus; quality of training; and teaching methods to name a few.
However, I think KM and PTK and Kali systems complement each other very well. I would not want to have to be forced to make a decision between the two. Good luck.

Thank you for giving me some information. I think Pekiti Tirsia Kali doesn’t teach self-defense but to be a killing machine.

quote JohnnyMontero:Thank you for giving me some information. I think Pekiti Tirsia Kali doesn’t teach self-defense but to be a killing machine.IMO, you are WAY OFF with that statement! Some unenlightened people might watch a KM training session and form the same opinion. MANY martial arts/self-defense/defensive tactics techniques and systems have the POTENTIAL to seriously injure or kill people. Just because a MA/SD/DT system has weapons in its curriculum or uses high intensity training methodology does Not mean it’s teaching the students to be “killing machines”. IMO, it’s up to the instructor to train only decent human beings and it’s up to each individual to have their own good morals, values, judgment, common sense, etc and to use what they are taught reasonably and responsibly.

Well said Don. I know there’s been a quite a few times since I’ve been learning KM I’ve gotten some really strange looks from family/coworkers when they hear what I’m learning. They think I’m training to be some Rambolina or something and that’s NOT the case. My hubby and I just refuse to be sitting ducks.

JM- I wouldn’t have you judge KM soley on IDF military training but sytems have roots.
With that said there are many vast and obvious differences between what is acceptable/necessary for military, civilian and law enforcement when encountering situations or objectives in the field or on the street.
Leave words like “killing machine” for Terminator & Jason Bourne movies.

Don’t be too reactive Don, i said “I think” remember? Based on the videos posted, do you think that’s self defense? IMO, they were fighting.

You might want to read or re-read what Tony posted. I’m familiar with a few different systems of kali/arnis/escrima so I “know better”. I was hoping that you might “know better” than to jump to conclusions and make sweeping generalizations about something based solely on one or two video clips and no personal knowledge/experience.

Wow, thanks Don, you’re too modest. Tell me more…
