Heres in LA the Sheriffs dept just switched over to the shield, I just got one but I haven’t put any down range yet.

My initial feelings are the grip is a little loose since I have large hands so I put a Hogue sleeve on it and it feels a little better. I upgraded the sights too.

    Anyone else get one, thoughts?

    Hey Sean,

We still carry Berettas and HKs and Sigs, etc, but our primary issue handgun is now the full size S&W M&P 9mm. IIRC, the S&W Shield has been approved for back up and off-duty carry.

Personally, I’m not a fan of striker fired guns, especially those without an external safety (which our model of MP9 does not have) and although I’ve been through our department certification training to allow me to carry the MP9, I’m sticking with my Berettas (plural).

I was issued an MP9 for about a minute (just long enough to go through the training) and then I turned it back in. It shot pretty good – I actually think follow up shots were faster/better on the MP9 than my Berettas and I think I could eventually get used to the MP9 but I didn’t want to make the time and money investment (buying all the same accessories that I have for my Berettas for the MP9).

I played with one MP9 that was fitted with APEX Tactical internals and WOW, super silky smooth shooting! Night and day difference between that and stock. Unfortunately (fortunately for my wallet), our department technically doesn’t allow modifications like that.

IF I were to buy a smaller S&W M&P platform, I think I would probably go with the compact. It’s a little bigger than the Shield but can take the full size MP9 magazines. And that’s only if I decided to switch over to the full size MP9 for duty…

Now all that being said, a handful of my partners in my unit recently purchased the Shield and all of them love it – I think they prefer the 8 round magazine with the pinky rest.

Thanks Don, lots of good input and I’m going to check out the APEX kit. I also ordered a few mag extensions with the pinkie rests hopefully that will clear up some of the grip awkwardness.

I really just needed something for CCW details that’s small enough there’s no printing and comfortable in an iwb. Might get a G26 a friends getting rid of, not really a “glock guy” but I’ve never owned one either.

    Always appreciate your view.

    Hey Sean,

Sorry I can’t give you more personal feedback! If you like the platform, I definitely think the Shield is a great choice for CCW. I think a Glock26 would be very nice too but I believe it’s a little “fatter” than the Shield. I’m carrying a 5 shot S&W J-frame revolver as a back up right now and wouldn’t mind switching to a compact/sub compact semi-auto 9mm at some point too…

    Hi,
The M&P is a great gun. If it fits you well and you like it, great. I’m a Glock Fan. thats just me. The Troopers switched from Glock to M&P a few years back (Oregon). The ones i work with seem to love them. I shot a friend’s and think it’s a nice shooting gun. The trigger seemed a little sloppy but not bad.

I’ll probably want to do the trigger job after I spend some range time with it so that should clean up the pull slop. Work in progress 🙂
