Recent article about the guy (Nichols) that broke out of custody, overpowered his female guard took her gun shot her in the head then killed the judge, court reporter, and another guard then escaped and possibly killed another agent and kidnapped a woman before he was captured : Nick Pergine, who played football with Nichols at Kutztown, said Nicholsí massive physical presence and martial arts skills earned him a reputation as someone to be careful around.
ìHe was a bad dude,î Pergine said. ìYou didnít mess with him.î
Jake Williams, who coached Nichols at Kutztown, compared Nicholsí physique with that of NFL star John Mobley, who also played at the university.
Sad part is this all could have been prevented. He was found earlier with two shanks in his shoes and they were supposed to \”beef up\” security. His one and only guard to the courtroom was a woman and he was not handcuffed due to the law that states that it would be unfair and prejudice an jury to see the defendant in handcuffs. What a crock. With a guy that big and with the advanced warnings and obvious weapons in his possession what did they think he’d do?
This guy sounds like the attacker from hell. Big, tall, muscular, martial arts expert? How do you beat a guy like that?
The account from that newspaper reporter was scary. First he is told to give up his keys. He does so (as you should in that situation). Then the guy tells him to get in the trunk and the reporter realizes that he better not comply with that request. Question is, if he had known Krav Maga, would he have been able to do the gun defense against that kind of guy? Would his punch have affected the guy enough to enable the reporter to take away the gun? Seems hard against a person that strong and experienced, but with the element of surprise hopefully it would have worked. Since he didn’t know any defense seems like the reporter just ran away and even though this was risky (he could have been shot in the back) it worked in this case and he got away.
I’m also wondering why there wasn’t more security around this guy, if he had already been found to possess handmade weapons. And how was he able to shoot that officer, who pursued him? Seems in this case the officer would have been justified to shoot him, even from the back, since the guy was carrying a gun and had already shot three people. Did the deputy have his gun drawn when he pursued him?
And how was he able to get away and calmly walk from one building to another without being apprehended? It’s scary, you see so much police around a court house and so you would think this could never happen, but I guess it can.
Did the reports explain why the hell he shot all the people in the courtroom? Why didn’t he just run away, if that was his intent? I guess he was just being anti-social. As for the reporter running away-that was the best thing in that situation. What did he have to lose? I couldn’t understand why the woman didn’t run when she had the chance-wasn’t there a point when she was in a car by herself with a cellphone? does anyone know the details?

Lets go over the facts: Nelson is a former football player who probably is using \”roids\” in order keep his edge while in lock-up. Now combine that with his MA experience , plus his lack of caring for human life and I’m certain you’ll have one hell of a problem on your hands. But wait, lets give this piece of crap a gun too! Do any of you guys think you could take out this guy \”empty handed\” and come out in one piece? I know I couldn’t. So I ‘d rather take my chances miaming him with escaping .
God bless the woman who talked him into turning himself in. Her faith and calmness of mind worked just as well as bullet!
PS. Didn’t the judge ask for tighter security on this guy? And the way he killed them, I’d swear it was a hit made to look like a rampage.
It also leads support to \”carrying Israeli\”. Americans assume every gun is loaded and racked. If the officer whose gun was stolen knew that her gun was NOT racked (and every other officer in the room) she and they could have reacted to retrieve the firearm (or the other officers could have drawn and tracked their own weapons before he figured out the problem). But when a criminal takes away your racked weapon, all they have to do is pull the trigger and it goes boom.

According to the new, the woman in the car with the cell phone did not run away, but returned to her apartment where Nichols was, because she was frightened that he would kill more people if she fled without first convincing him to give up peacefully.
I think the story of that woman was pretty amazing. The way she managed to stay calm and almost ‘befriend’ the guy. Humanize herself to him by talking about her family and then convincing him that God brought them together, so she could tell him to turn himself in. That’s what ultimately saved her life. If she had tried to fight him instead, who knows what the outcome would have been.
That’s another form of self-defense to always keep in mind: Try and use your verbal skills if you feel your physical skills will not suffice to overcome your attacker.
What was this guy’s martial arts background? I’m guessing tae kwon do simply because every martial artists I’ve heard of has had a TKD background and I don’t know why (probably because its so popular). Nothing against the style itself- just a really odd trend I’ve noticed.

I would not support LEOs carrying in any other way except with a round in the chamber and, in the case of single action pistols, hammer back/safety on. The fact that the weapon can be brought into play faster outweighs the idea that it MIGHT help police officers that MIGHT have their weapons taken away. The solution to weapon retention is training in effective techniques not further restricting the LEOs ability to defend themselves.

Yeah, I am sure that the middle aged, overweight female deputy (who had required three remedial training sessions in 5 years) would have easily beaten the BadGuy down, and took the gun back, had there not been a round in the chamber <sarcasm>. In addition, you seem to be under the impression that a hardened criminal doesn’t possess the basic firearm knowledge to rack the slide if the gun doesn’t go bang? Even if he didn’t know how to chamber a round from watching TV/Video games/Rap videos, a gun makes a pretty good impact weapon. I credit the Isreali’s with a lot, but carrying a gun without a round in the chamber is stupid. If you don’t believe me, try doing a Tueller drill with an unloaded gun…
At the beginning of this thread someone asked why Nicolis shot these people. According to all the news reports and interviews at Fox 5 news here in Atlanta, he was a two time offender on trial for rape and aggravated assult. The Judge was the trial Judge. Evently, he had a vendetta against the judge.
Supposedly the female guard escorting him was not armed at the time of the assult. She had locked her weapon in a lockup box according to procedures. When she released one of his handcuffs so he could change clothes, Nicolis overpowered her, throwing her into the dressing room/area, severely injuring her head and taking her keys. He went straight to the lock box and retrieved her weapon. He then went on his rampage, kidnapping people, shooting the judge in the back of the head, killing the court reporter, and killing another deputy as he exited the building. He said he killed the customs agent because the agent fought back and refused to give up his car that Nicolis wanted to steal.
The whole story is strange and mixed up. I don’t know why the woman he was holding hostage didn’t excape when she had the chance. But, she is very religiois and she said she felt she was like an angel doing Gods work in gaining Nicolis’ trust, preventing him from hurting/killing anyone else, and ultimatly getting him to turn himself in. She even cooked him pancakes in the morning. That being said, my hat’s off to the woman – very brave. And like mentioned earlier, I hope Nicolis gets his due.
This guy thought he was a Christian too, don’t forget. He must think it is the end times and the Gov/Police are the Antichrist….poor fool.
We are gona see alot more stuff like this as the Country starts going more and more into a police state to fight the war on Terror and all the psycopaths start getting rounded up. It just triggers a bad reaction in these people. Police are gonna all need to be retrained to protect themselves better. This fool had two shanks in his boots the day before didn’t he? They should have had a live round pointed at him at all times, but hindsight is 20/20.
Very sad, and very alarming, how many Judges have been killed in last few months?
