We just completed our first Rape Prevention seminar. It went great! We had 16 new women attend, as well as six of our women’s self-defense class regulars. We only had a two hour window for the class, so we had to modify the schedule somewhat.

    Here’s what went well:

1.) Good hints gathered from the KM outline. We started with instructor introductions and then went into an overview about situational awareness, sticking with the points made in the lesson plan.

2.) We used Kelly’s “Walk the Line” drill with the group broken into two, lined up facing each other. We then had each participant, one at a time, walk through, making eye contact at each person, looking confident as they went by. We then talked about being nervous in such a situation and recognizing that feeling. We then had them do it again – pretty cool results!

3.) We got a lot of great questions. I think that our instructors (including two cops, btw) did a great job of answering these questions.

4.) We got a lot of positive response in our demo of how to use words and body language to keep someone away. The women were eager to participate in this segment and it resulted in a lot of great information being put out.

5.) The “Transformer” suit was a huge hit! Our regular students started out with the drill, responding to an attack by the guy in the suit and then kicking his butt! About half of the new participants decided to give it a try. One lady jumped on the guy’s back and tried to choke him out! This led to a discussion about trading one danger for another…

6.) We had a quick ground work demo, showing how all is not lost when you end up on your back. We showed the trap and roll (time didn’t allow for all to try this, but the women who did the demo did get the plug in for signing up for our regular classes!).

7.) Someone on the conference call had warned us that this type of class could lead to some bad emotions coming to the surface for some of the attendees. Thanks to whoever mentioned that, as we did have one woman who had a real tough time with this. She was treated very well by everyone in the class. Our staff supported her and got her through this (she did leave early, I did speak to her afterwards and she is doing fine).

We are doing a second version of this class tomorrow for high school girls (with at least one parent in attendance). Pictures and additional comments will follow.

Good luck to all with your own seminars. Please post about your experiences so that we can make this better. Thanks!

    Re: Rape Prevention seminar

We just completed day 2 of the seminars. Today was specifically for high school aged girls. We had 11 participants. Things went very well again.

I think that the best part of this weekend was the way in which our instructors and members worked together to put on a great demonstration of what KM is all about.
