Sticking with the principle that one movement should address multiple variations of an attack, why when doing long gun disarm from the front do you extend your fingers downward? where as handgun disarm from the front they are extended upward..

    Re: weapon defense-hand placement

Okay, good question and very common…

First, you make it sound like the redirect must be done with the fingers down on long gun. Let’s start with this. You do what is natural given the height of the gun in relation to you. Meaning, your wrist will only allow you to perform the defense with fingers down up to a certain height (depend on your height and the attackers), then your wrist will naturally want to make the defence with your fingers up… none of which is incorrect. Make the defense fingers up, fingers down…

Secondly, when defending against long gun, the safest place to be is on the inside of the barrel, not obviously on the outside. While you can certainly perform gun from the front against a long gun (and it has been done in a live patrol situation), it does not allow you complete a take-away (if necessary).

The reason for the initial redirect in long gun allows you to burst “inside”, control the weapon and perform your counter attacks with much greater control of the weapon then if you used a handgun defense to the front. Keep in mind, they may have two hands on the weapon, a pistol grip and/or handguard..etc giving them excellent control of the weapon. This also allows for the defender to be struck with the butt of the weapon and or the barrel. The defense takes this into consideration. Then, if the situation dictates you can perform the take-away, which due to the nomenclature of the weapon will be different than the handgun disarm.

CJ’s Dad and I have talked quite a bit about long gun, perhaps he can chime in here with more and fill in what I may have left out but I hope it helps.

Kirsten explained the defense very well. Another point could be made simply that in handgun defense, the goal is to grab immediately after redirection so the fingers MUST be up, that way you can grab over the muzzle and punch in. In long gun, the initial hand movement is not a grab at all but a simple redirection with an open hand so you are not limited. The grab is made by the second hand, which has fingers up.

Also, you’ll notice that when the long gun is pointed at your chest or lower, having your fingers point up shortens your reach dramatically.
