I’m telling you right now training without sparring is setting you up to lose if the real thing goes down. Until someone has tried, any of their training with live resistance then one can’t really say they can do it.
It’s like learning to swim without ever getting wet.

I’ve seen it happen at my dojo against students who have trained for years and are at level 2 and 3. A couple of weeks ago one of my classes did live ground training we’re anything goes (in a safe controlled manner, obviously) and I almost everyone I rolled against had subpar skills. And bear in mind I only rolled against level 3 students who took the schools ground class, in addition to their other classes. Unfortunately the ground class has little sparring as well.

When we strike spar it’s the same problem. A lot of students drill, drill, drill but when the round starts they’re training goes out the window and they make a lot of rookie mistakes. The only ones who do well are the fight class students where all they do is spar for the entire class. Notice a trend there?

Drilling without sparring won’t prepare a student for a real fight. Likewise sparring without drilling and getting proper reps is just as ineffective. Doing that will make someone a brawler without learning the art of striking and when they run into someone who does know it; is just a better brawler and or bigger and stronger they will not fare well in that instant.
You have to do both to be a complete fighter.

    quote Kirsten:

Re: Training with gloves or not

Nothing more frustrating than somebody that refuses to wear wraps or gloves in my classes then bleeds all over everyone and my equipment. Its inconsiderate and nobody is buying the “I am really tough” thing when they are cleaning all the blood up and apologizing for creating a hazmat issue in class.

Happened to me twice, so far. And when I got my training partner’s blood on my hand I was not to pleased. >:(

I’ve also noticed when someone doesn’t use hand protection they start off strong but their punches weaken the longer they go. Eventually their knuckles are so sore they just can’t put any power into their strikes.

I’ve only punched bare knuckled, in Krav class once. My very first one and only because we went outside and I didn’t have time to go back in to get my MMA gloves. My knuckles hurt like hail and my right fist still has a small scar on it to this day.

Now I have those(grappling gloves) and some gel hand wraps. I prefer using the gels because they’re small enough to give me feedback if I’m punching wrong but still protect my knuckles and wrists.

Actual experience of any type will always help. Drilling without actually doing it in a realistic situation, to compare it too is useless. Part of the reason I am anxious to move up to Level 2.

One of my classmates is in his late 50’s early-mid 60’s and just passed his Level 2 test. On top of that he did it with a bad hamstring and still soldiered through the four hour test like a champ.

Big fan of them, but like any technique you have to drill them a lot of to do it in a realistic time.

The last couple classes I’ve been able to hit them from various attacks /defenses.

Just tonight in class I was able to set them up from Front Choke defenses. When I raise my arm to break the choke I notice my partners hand is stuck between my shoulder and arm, with pressure already being applied, and I can grab and lock up the wrist in no time. I apply enough pressure to make my partner tap, leaving them standing, but in a real life situation I would prefer to force my opponent to the ground then run for it while they’re getting up.

So far I’ve caught various people utilizing that technique.
