HeHeHe…..It stands for Wing Tsun in Martial Arts. I knew what you meant, but thanks for fixing it….I was so excited to see a thread about the WT punch!!

Ya, I still check in every few days, but I only post to specific things that you Krav folks can’t cover yourself. Or I should say, things I have specific experience in that will add to the thread beyond what you guys did.

Like the Belts/Ranking thread a few weeks ago.

I am an assiatant Instructor as I have to get a few more grades to be an \”official\” instructor…. 😀

I have been doing it since 1998, under Master Rene, Emin B., and a few other guys here around Sacramento. Rene doesn’t really care about titles, but about quality.

    Ranks in EBMAS

Ranks in all Wing Tsun and Latosa Escrima systems have standardized testing requirments and follow the Prussian School System.

K-12 which we call Student Grades

and 10 Degrees, which we call Levels
4 College degrees: AA, Bachlors, Masters, PhD are called Technical Levels

4 Post Doc/ Prof. Master levels which are Practioner Levels

    and
2 Head Master levels, like Deans of the college

The test standard is for the whole world, i.e. the lowest common standard to be expected from regular people. It is more of a record keeping method for instructors, as we often travel, so we can see the material each student is currently training, by their rank, without having meet them before. It does also serve as a goal for students to improve and pass tests, but that is not the point of having them.

Freelance and people scared of mirrors,

I think a key element is the situation, and the responce. If a friend or co-worker does something, your brain does not see it as a threat. You have to switch over yourself.

A mirror, even if it reflects your own image, is generally not in the \”correct\” framework so it triggers the fight or flight responce. We have eliminated the flight responce so guess what, you fight 🙂 . I had this happen with a hotel mirror in a hallway. It was in an alcove and it triggered me EVERYTIME I walked by, even knowing it was there. It was a guy in an alcove!! I do not want to get used to that…

Freelance, at WORK, being attacked by a Coworker had many layers of behaviour control on. Since the punches where really not a threat, it was not a trigger to start combat. Seeing someone, even your clone, in the Hotel room with you is a big trigger. Freelance could have been fired right along with the other guy if he fought back, and could have been the only one if he stepped up with a knock out blow, so he did the best thing, got to a safe defendable positon.

Another cool thing is that we can stop the attack BEFORe we hit the mirror. I think this come from the way we care about our sparring partners. It shows we have skill and control, even in threatening encounters. This is good if we need to defend our action in court. These experince shows our training includes the ability stop ourselves, that we are not uncrontolable lose cannons. Your reaction start, but there is still time to THINK about the event, and adjust to it.

just a few things like being arrested without charges and detained without a lawyer or without anyone being told(Disapeared they used to say in Russia), having your home searched without warrent and without notification, giving powers to secret service and FBI without Judicial review, tracking book sales and library records. It goes on and on….Most people trust the Gov to do this with responcibility, but we demand that this stuff expire, and be reviewed again every few years. It can not be made perminant.

an example of abuse? I have a few, but I dare someone to give an exmple of it actually being used to stop terrorists….

\”Smoking in public hurts others, cars driving on roads affect others, Bailsongs only damage the users own fingers.\”

So, if I OWN a restaurant, I shouldn’t be able to decide if patrons can smoke or not? The second part is a ridiculous leap.

    what second part?

If you own a resturant that is open to the public use, you must follow the rules of said public. If you want to start a private club, then you can do it and establish your own set of rules. Smoking in the workplace was also a good point. In order to understand this issue, you have to look at how segragation was treated and removed. Very simialer.

Cars being driven by their very nature are dangerous to many non involved partys, so they also fall under a public sphere of influence.

As to the Balisong. I should google it but I got other fish to fry. Any of these weapons that gets added to the banned list has someone press the issue first. Things which do not have any other uses are easy to ban. Brass knuckles became paperweights….I have a very old memory of Mothers lobbying to get rid of Balisongs do to their children cutting up their fingers when playing with them. There is also the rapid openning issue, which switch blades share. Switch blades and silettos also have a spring loaded mechinism which puts them into their own catagory. Why do you need the spring? To kill.

But just because the thing could be used to kill should not be enough to make it illegal….

\”]\”Smoking in public hurts others, cars driving on roads affect others, Bailsongs only damage the users own fingers.\”
This was a joke, lighten up a little….

As to the car milege, Gas tax for roads will become outdated with electric and fuel effecient vehicles. Californians are allready complaining that they want an upfront Tax on hybrids!! They see it as a penalty for going Green. While GPS tracking seems Orwellian, and with Bushco in power, I don’t like the idea either. Maybe scanners that track a sticker in the window? You could always change the sticker, or buy non-id stickers like we do with cell phones….

I realize that Americans Honestly paying their fair share of taxes all on their own is to much to ask. We will have to track them….

A seat belt may help you stay in control of your vehicle if some idiot hits you. Since the vehicle is very dangerous, we require many things to keep it from running into houses or over bus stops.

Helmets on Moterbikes, that is more social. If I hit you and you are on a motorbike, you being helmetless increases MY liability. We are all forced to work together on the road. You being nearly invisible on the bike makes me force you to wear a helmet incase I bump into you with my car.

So aside from the welfare/insurance, the shared use of roads has other issues.

Smoke travels, it kills and at the least, makes people like me cough.

Your freedom does not allow you to drive into my house or put smoke into my lung. (Please ignore the smoke from the car into peoples lungs….stay on target).

The bailsong and switch blade are illegal because people kept cutting their own fingers off.(wierd, as I typed this a guy on TV said, \”cut 3 of my fingers off…\”) or stabbing themselves. It is a classic law of protecting people from themselves. Killing others is allready illegal, no matter what method you use.

Just so we are all clear, in the USA, any group of people can create a set of laws to govern how they get along. If you don’t like local laws, move. Get a group of like minded folks and make your own laws. However, these laws can not restrict an individuals actions if these actions DO NOT AFFECT OTHERS.

Smoking in public hurts others, cars driving on roads affect others, Bailsongs only damage the users own fingers.

Pointed toe kick up and under to the solar plexus. This can kill a dog, so do not do it to a freiends or family animal. As mentioned, the bad ones that attack for real like to jump. This kick works good when they jump or just come low to bite. I used to practice nice useing the whole top of my foot against chest, to get the timing, but never with the toe.

I have had many, many dog encounters! They can jump from several meters to your head height. You can move out of the way once they jump, if you have time. I have had to grab them out of the air, when I was in the way of them attacking another dog in a truck.

A big Rottie attacked me once, knocked me down, came for me. I knew this dog and was feeding it for a friend who was away. It got jealous of another dog, fought with her then came for me. I grabed a hand full of ear and twisted it tighted around my fist and then slamed his head into the floor, as I gained a side mount. The Grab and twist both hurt him and also prevented him from turning his head to bite that arm. The slaming his head let him know I was still boss, as well as the double knee pin. I let him up a little, he growled, I slamed again, after a few times he believed me. Then I held him down but let up a little on his ear, and we had a little talk 😉

I was alpha for him from then on!!!

Dogs react to you if you know your the alpha, as most wanna be the beta anyway. Alot of dog problems result when there is no alpha member in the household and the dog gets confused. If you are not really an Alpha then any tricks I tell you to use, like licking your lips and staring, will just get you in more trouble. If your are an Alpha, then you won’t generally have much trouble. 😆

but the pointy toe to the sternum hard and deep, that works.

(edit:I read article, very good. jsut wanted to paste this in. If you do go down and are being mauled, \”The only thing that may have worked would have been to drop to the ground, curl up in a ball with your hands clasped behind your neck and your arms and elbows protecting your neck and throat. Not many people can keep their wits about them when they are being bitten this badly. They go into flight mode and try and get away. \”)

Both people win in sparring, it is an exercise.

JKD is about mastering systems. Most people try to collect parts and make their own system. This is not correct. ystems are not often made in one generation.

Bruces first system was WC. He needed to add missing parts. He mastered other systems to get parts. WC had a place to put them.

Hawkings Chueng wrote a great article in IKF explaining this concept. Maybe a style has one great move. You still need to master the system to understand the move. The move doesn’t stand alone.

KM is just the same punches and kicks everyone else uses. It is the collection of theorys and applications that make it KM.

Even if you do try to master two systems, say BJJ and MT, you still need to make it your own, to combine them together. This is not easy, and alot of fighting and sparring are required. This is where the idea of a \”complete\” system comes in.

A complete system will have avenues for each tool that you master. It may not have ground fighting, but it will have a structure so that when you take judo or BJJ, it fits right in. JKD is trying to do this. Sometimes JKD becomes its own style, and this can be a problem. It becomes a collection of parts, and not a system.

Hey I agree it is unacceptable too!!! but the military does some things we may not understand, or think makes much sense, for an individual.

It boils down to the question, \”when will a solider be without a weapon and without buddies to back him up\”. The answer is that it is unacceptable that this situation even happens to begin with. So they work towards not letting it happen.

Anytime spent in H to H is time spent away from weapons and team work and communications. So now the chances on needing H to H go up. But H to H is almost useless on todays battlefield. So you have increased the chances of being in the situation where you can use a skill that, although better, is not fit to the task. The military focus elsewhere to prevent the need for H to H.

Also, the better they are at H to H, the more often they might get into fights on R and R. I imagine a statistic somewhere about soliders getting hurt at bars and such, vs use in Combat….anyway, BJJ then solves many of these problems. If they do fight they are not breaking fingers on skulls Punching eachother and other drunks, and they can train on their own time and get fitness plus not hurt each other. BJJ injurys seem to be the kind you can work around, compaired to broken knuckles or cracked ribs.

Just some thoughts, i am no expert.

Last, they always want prisoners!! Inteligence is key!! A guy they where just trying to kill, if he is now the last guy, is prime candidate for being an information source…..but I think Prosser just went for the most available option, the tackle, instead of getting shot trying to draw his pistol, as was said earlier.
