    The baseball bat is probably better than a sword and never requires sharpening. Training with everyday items is a good idea.

    I think if you have a good traning partner you can although I have no knowledge of KM Online or its syllabus.

    KM should definitely evolve for instance BJJ changed matters in the 90 s all students must now be able to defend take / hold downs.

    Personally the way I find best is Burpees no pressup but with jump. You should be able to do 50 or you are not fighting fit. For strength its the marine pressup and marine pull up test – 50 and 15 respectively as the baseline and dont waste time energy with sit ups.

    If defending head punches use side cover it is safer. The 360 aka outside defence is important for weapons eg club or knife etc.

    There is no full proof way but imho a dropping shoulder throw works well if you practice it alot. The minute the arm comes around get chin down grab arm and shoulder throw by dropping to one knee.     The easiest method that works well for me is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v593VNajZpQ about 29 min mark. I dont necessarily agree with his all his other techniques. It may not be KM approved so I apologise if this treads on any toes.
