Re: 360 defense vs overhead stab, wrapping vs control of stabbing hand

I understand the point being made, but could someone explain how the individual would wrap the arm holding the knife? I’m having trouble visualizing it.

Re: Favorite Place to go to for Phase classes

Al is right, James is an awesome instructor, and training in Broomfield was a blast! I liked it because his school was right next to a super market so I could grab food after training to take back to the hotel. Training in columbia, md was good too. The facility is great, and there’s two hotel right next to it. My only problem was there wasn’t a decent grocery store close by, at least that I found while wandering aroundafter training for the day. I had a great time at both and hold them both equally.

Re: Defense vs the big right hand

they aren’t “better” than the 360 defenses, they’re just different tools to be used. The outside defenses are generally used when you are out of position, as in, you are not in a fighting stance, your hands aren’t up, or you have only one had to use…i know, i said this already.

they could be used instead, as i have done this before. but they work best protecting the upper body, especially the head. the 360 defenses work well covering the whole body.

as for being taught at a higher level, i personally don’t want my beginner students to think too much. i don’t want them to try and decide which is better for that situation, i just want them to react to the threat. and since the outside defenses are built upon, or slightly modified from 360, it is easier to teach 360 first. from the 360 defenses, outside defenses are easier to learn. now, more advanced beginners (had previous training) i have no problem teaching this to early on because they understand positioning. for people who have no experience, explaining to infinite scenarios you can get in to can be an overload. so, i can say 360 defense is a good all purpose general defense, where as an outside defense is a specific defense to a specific attack.

i hope this helps, and if anyone else can clarify what i said, by all means…..

Re: Defense vs the big right hand

To clear any confusion about what I mean with outside defenses…

Some do call 360 defenses outside defenses due to the fact that they defend the outside of your body (not defending the center line, or inside of the body like inside defense). Green belt has 5 defenses called outside defense which are basically modifications to the 360 defenses. These 5 address issues of your hands being or body not being in an ideal position; such as hands are down, only able to use one hand or happen to be bent over tying your shoe or the punch is a small looping straight/hook hybrid.

If it isn’t coming straight at me, has some sort of hook, good ol’ 360 defenses work. Level 3 teaches outside defenses that work, but I usually resort to a 360 block.

Re: Help, My knee’s don’t like the exercise

I didn’t have it as bad as what you describe, but I did have the sore knees after class. After losing a few pounds they didn’t hurt as much, but still was annoying. I eventually got some knee braces. I started out with a set that has the hinged steel bar, then stepped down to a set that has the flexible band down the side, then to a set that was more of a compression type of brace. This seemed to work, for me, coupled with some rest when they needed it.

    Hope it helps.

Re: Gun to the back of the head.

It’s essentially the same. The big difference is that you have to emphasize getting your head out if the line of fire, by rolling-in a sense-your head along the side of the gun. Everything else is the same

Hydrate, power bar type foods during the day (something that stays down, over eating and heavy foods are your enemy), aleeve was a good friend to me as was tiger balm. Review what you have learned shortly after the days training is done, and before passing out. Use time inbetween to relax. Listen to what is said, ask questions, and give 100+% every day. Not much else I can give as advice. Good luck, and most importantly, have fun!

    Re: home defense weapons

i like his creativeness, but, a credit card is too awkward to get to. the pen should be supported at one end to aid in the penetration of the attacker’s skin. lighter, and flailing keys…wth? a tv remote works if used as a hammer, little brother did it to me the other day, broke the remote, but left a nice bump on my head. the distractions are decent and can buy some time.

but seriously, the video should have been posted one time….

    Re: home defense weapons

he was worried about the drywall itself. serious. something about resale value and not wanting to spend a lot of money repairing the walls.

i did talk to him about it some more though, and right round kicked some sense into his head. he likes the shotgun for the fright by sight, but is more worried about multiple trajectories of multiple objects fired from the gun; so he feels that one projectile with one trajectory is safer. so, still leaning towards a 9mm.

LOL, all this talk of guns for home defence.

In the UK, we would prosecuted if we tickled an intruder with a feather, nevermind blow his head off…..

here in wisconsin, if someone breaks into your house while you are there, we can defend ourselves as we see fit, under reason. but, if the individual escapes, we can be held liable for their injuries.

    Re: home defense weapons

i hear ya on the shotgun, and i just can’t convince him otherwise. i consulted my dad, and he agrees with the shotgun idea. he also agreed with the 9mm hollow point alternative with his reasoning being that it is a smaller round with less recoil than a .40+ caliber, making it easier to acquire the target. and with his current room mate being female, that a 9mm may be less intimidating than a shotgun.
