Re: Large Class Small Class
quote Chocolate Soldier:I find that beyond a certain number of students – a ‘critical mass’ of energy builds in the room which makes everybody try harder and also makes some drills more fun. a group of 4 people would seem pretty sparse IMO.I get that. It’s much easier to yell louder and get pumped up with all of the noise around me.

I had to google Phil Hartman.
I actually had a girlfriend long time ago whom I tried to teach the rear naked choke to (back then I knew it as the sleeper hold). Well I forgot to tell her what it means when I tap, and I awoke twitching on the floor and she was terrified that she just maimed me.

I am currently working towards my Instructor Qualification in MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program). Here are my thoughts on the subject:
It is entirely possible to teach what you know, as long as you know how to teach it. Knowing techniques and being proficient in their execution is NOT the same as being able to instruct. It is one thing to do what your instructors say, and another to 1) understand why you are doing it that way, and 2) be able to effectively communicate this information to your students.
You don’t have to be a master to be a teacher, but you do have to be a teacher to teach correctly. If you don’t know the entire mechanics behind the material and have controls in place to keep it safe, you should not be instructing. This is why certification is important.
There is also the matter of liability, but that is an entirely new ball of wax. I have no problems teaching my wife how to get out of a choke hold, but no way in hell would I try teaching the neighbor’s kids. If something goes wrong, it’s your a**.
My $.02

Well… Next week I make my move to Okinawa. I’m still going to check this guy’s program out and see if it’s anything I want to be involved in. I will report my findings 🙂

quote Black_Ops:i Would Rather Be Judged By 12, Than Be Carried By 6.This.
The way I have always understood “self-defense” is that it is about perceived threat. If you knock your attacker to the ground, but your leg is in a cast and you cannot run away, are you still in danger?
If you are able to run away, but you have a family member with you who is not, is there still a threat?
Bottom line is, you cannot stop to think about what this guy’s lawyer may do to you in court months from now – you have to worry about what his knife may do to you seconds from now.

On Killing was an excellent read. Highly recommended.

I’d really love to see exactly what they put into that computer simulation, because the IRA got a knife kill without knives having ever been mentioned as one of their weapons, and the taliban ended up with a friendly fire death…
It doesn’t add up.

That first-time brain dump happens to everyone and is why sparring is important.
My contribution is this: keep your tongue stuck to the roof of your mouth so you don’t end up biting yourself if you get hit 🙂
Also, try to pair up with the more experienced guys once in awhile when you can. You may not be able to hit them, but oftentimes they can give you running commentary and offer on-the-spot corrections that a less experienced partner may not be able to.

I hear the last episode is going to be on the 31st 🙁
No word yet on a 2nd season.

Thanks for the input. This same guy is a former Marine and teaches karate on base for the last 30 years. So I may just go for that, and stop in to check out his Krav class just to see what it is. If I like what I see, perhaps I will do both.
But I do think that some bona fide karate training won’t hurt anything, and will only serve to round out my martial arts experience. I would like to look at Aikido as well, but from what I hear it’s tough for a white guy to find a quality school in Okinawa.

I know that about 5-6 years ago they were asking for tampons and silly string, but they are probably good by now 🙂
Snacky food is always welcome. Beef jerky, junk food, what have you. Best bet is to ask him, “What do you miss about home that you can’t find here?”
I have also heard you can fit two cans of beer quite easily in a pringles can, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

I have demonstrated the front and rear gun defense to a few of my Marines using an electronic toy pistol.
I was able to perform the technique before he was able to squeeze the trigger. It works.
May 4, 2009 at 1:51 am #75340devilnutsMemberRe: Krav in high school
Remember to use the appropriate amount of force necessary to end the threat, and no more. If someone is pushing you around, don’t immediately go for his eyes. Self defense isn’t about looking tough or shutting someone up who says mean things to you. It is about recognizing a real threat and ending it.
If someone is trying to hurt you, kick his ass. Once he stops trying to hurt you, stop kicking his ass.
But you had better be sure before you do it. Nowadays you can’t really do anything in school without being arrested, strip searched, put on watch lists and expelled. As a Kravist, you are able to see things coming and respond to situations in ways that a normal person cannot. As such, you may be held to a higher standard of liability if you are within your power to avoid violent confrontation and instead choose to fight.
May 2, 2009 at 12:52 pm #75298devilnutsMemberRe: Weight training as a complement to krav?
quote Nauticus:It’s never a bad idea to do some additional athletic training.This. Weight training is a good idea whether you study KM or not. It is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The trifecta:
Nutrition
Cardio
Weight trainingWith the proper balance of these three, You can turn yourself into a shrine in no time.
Weight training is ideal for weight loss too because it boosts your metabolism, telling the body to burn fat instead of burning muscle mass. Just make sure you are consuming enough calories when you start training; if you do not eat enough, your body will take what it needs from your muscle and fat mass.
