Re: Coming back from elbow injury?

    Hey Ron

When your attacking with the knife it should be coming from an outside direction or across the body or stright in. Is you partner defending the attack wrist to wrist or are they missing and coming into contact with your elbow joint? It sounds like one of three things are happening.
    1. Your attacking very close and the defender is blocking properly but they end up hitting your elbow and not the wrist or forearm
    2. Your defender is moving in during the defense and block at the elbow and not the wrist.
    3. You attack with such force and your defender is defending at a point too near your elbow and in essence your hyper extending your elbow in the attack. The only realy pain you should have is the forearms.

Re: Krav Maga for less-abled people?

    Hello Splat

Krav Maga is a very effective system for everyone including those with physical limitations. You have to think outside the box when approaching any training especially with people with mobility or health issues. First off we need to address the need to fall back on self defense techniques at all. 90% of confrontations can be avoided by utilizing good personal safety skills. Remeber the 4 R’s of personel safety those are Risk Awareness, Risk Recognition, Risk Reduction, Risk Avoidance, the RAD instructors out there will recognize those terms. Type those terms into Google and you will find all kinds of stuff on personal safety.

No matter what you do sometimes you are faced with a situation where you must act. Almost everyone can step forward and strike with the palm, or deliver a foot stomp or low shin kick. There are all kinds of things out there that can level a playing field when someone is attacked. There are these cool things called Kuba-kickz that are legal and suck when you get kicked by. If your relative uses a cane I would suggest checking out http://www.canemasters.com. Maybe find a tia-chi class this can help with mobility, flexibility and self-defense.

Another good resource is the International Disabled Self-Defense Association. You can find them at http://www.defenseability.com. Any self defense instructor should be able to adapt techniques to help with someone who is disabled. Ask them and see what they can come up with.

    Good luck

    Re: Tips for sparring

    Hello KMCedric

First issue – Make sure your wearing all the needed gear. Gloves, shin pads, mouth guard, head protection and I would suggest some Ring Star shoes or something soft soled. Remember sparring is about learning not killing your partner. That being said you need to fight to find your weaknesses and help your partner find theirs. I am a supporter of full contact wil the proper gear full contact is acceptable but be careful of knee strikes those can cripple your partner for life, if done at the knee as opposed to leg strikes to the thigh or sweeps to the foot or calf.

You should focus on proper technique, accuracy, control and power, in that order. If you strike with proper technique, with good accuracy, and with proper control you can hit your partner with a strike that will be full power but will only bruise. You can do the same thing to a bad guy and break bones or cause internal damage.

These aspects come with training, that is why you start with slow movements and light contact. Stay the course and practice, the heavy contact will come but develop the skill above first.

As far a tips here are a few.

If your opponent sticks a hand out to close to you grab and strip his arm. Kinda like walking hand over hand up the arm until you strike him in the face. I really enjoy stepping on the lead leg foot and coming in with a right left strike to the face. The foot stomp distracts their attention and keeps them from kicking with that lead foot. I also like to act like I am really winded and ill slup over and put my hands on my knees. They will close in and you can lunge in and back fist to the groin then back fist to the face and follow up with a round kick.

Hope these tips help. Also watch other spar. learn what works on Tall people short people and so forth.

    Re: Comfortable Groin Protection

I have had two of the Shock Doctor plastic cups crack on me. They start with small cracks which look like they develop from alot of flex in the cup and start to create a crack.

I upgraded to the alloy cup and the only issue is the cup starts to develop what looks like rust under the silicon/rubber area. This cup is very comfortable in the Shock Doctor compression shorts and have taken alot of dynamic front kicks from fellow instructors along with alot of hard Kajukenbo sparring. You made a good investment.

Do you participate in any sparring? I am not talking point sparring, but free sparring. In my opinion you need to keep fighting to develop your skills. We have several older gentlemen in their 60’s that can hand most people a butt kicking. Injuries do happen, but they are minor. Train like you fight, fight like you train.

Someone on here said “proper technique is important, but in the end training and conditioning is what saves you”

    Re: Weak kicking technique

    Hello Seraphs

Are you working with an instructor our studying on your own? I find many people lack power initially due to not pushing their hips forward when kicking. As far as weight training I would suggest focusing more on your core. most of the power in your punches, knee strikes, and kicks generate a lot of power from the core.

    Train hard and be safe,

Re: Looking for an Official Krav Maga Worldwide Training Center?

    Hello VCFD1931
I would think you should enjoy Krav Maga with your Wing Chun background. Many of the principles are very similar between the two systems. Concepts such as efficiency in technique, attacking along center line and striking on the inside as opposed to wide outside attacks.

    Train hard and be safe.
