Off to my first class in months due to hamstring pull and just being busy with life. Feeling like I’m starting all over. Not feeling too confident!

I got several bumps and bruises and a badly pulled hamstring that kept me out for 2 months.

I am 52 and started Krav a few months ago. I enjoy it but sometimes feel intimidated since most of the people in the class are in their 20s and 30s. I often feel I cannot keep up with them but just try to do my best.

I have the same problem. I cannot get to Krav more than once a week, and often have to skip a week or two due to work or other things in life getting in the way. I therefore don’t feel I am making much progress. Any ideas? Thanks.

I am 52 and started Krav about 3 months ago. I have taken a hiatus for the last 3 weeks due to work demands and hope to start again this week. I enjoy it but sometimes get discouraged because as one of the older people in the class I do not do as well as most of the younger people. I do like the vigorous workout and the camaraderie of the class. Good luck!

I have been doing Krav for about 3 months, and am surprised how much contact there is in my beginning class. There is no head contact, but full contact on the rest of the body, including groin. In fact, the sensei warns all of the men in the class at the beginning if there is going to be groin kicking to be sure we all have cups on; no cup then no class.

    Re: Slow Progress

I actually switched KM schools and this one does a bit better at training beginners. I have to take about 2 weeks off now as I have a strained hamstring. Never realized how painful that could be. We were practicing kicks to just below our partner’s chest, and I missed the target and went too high with nothing to stop my leg. I went right down. Every day it is a drop better. I feel like missing 2 weeks will cause me to almost have to start again from scratch.

    Re: Comfortable Groin Protection

I actually bought the Shock Doctor Air Core hard cup. It is advertised to be as strong as the bio flex but weighs less. While no cup is comfortable, I have found it to be more so than others. It came with the compression shorts, but the cup moves around too much and actually hurts a little since it can grind into sensitive spots. I am using the cup with a jockstrap instead, as the jock hold it in place better.

Re: Need some feedback before my first class please.

I started Krav Maga about one month ago. I am 52, recently had significant weight loss, and started this program to gain some self confidence and strength. I’ve ever done any martial arts before. I am some back issues (in fact I skipped tonight’s class as my back was hurting a bit) but explained them to the instructor. My range of motion is also not to the level of most of the other students. The instructor is good at letting me know when something might be a strain on my back and advises to go easy. I think you should speak with your shoulder surgeon to be sure you are not going to do anything to compromise your health. Good luck.

Anyone know the difference between the SD Bio Flex cup and the carbon flex cup? Any preferences?

    quote catapult:

    Hey ship,

It sounds like a glib answer but I’m actually serious. Sometimes the best thing for “book smart” people is to read a book. Different people learn different ways. Some learn better by imitation and some learn better by having the theory explained to them. For the latter, once they have a mental image of a physical movement firmly in mind, they can do it better in the real world. Darren Levine’s “Krav Maga for Beginners” is really good at breaking down the techniques.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I do best with repetition not of the theory but of the actual movements. I am hoping with the steps being taught again I will be a quicker learner.

    Re: Uniform Question

Our instructor was extremely unhappy the other night when a few people wore regular work out clothes instead of the KM uniform. Really dwelled on it. I don’t see what difference it makes as long as you wear clothes that give enough freedom of movement.

    Re: Groin protection in L2

I just started kvav maga and bought a regular Shock Doctor cup, not anything special for martial arts. Even though only had two classes I came to realize why it is suggested guys wear a cup, and the Shock Doctor seems to do the job. I like it in a jockstrap rather than compression shorts as it gets held closer to the body. Is this the best kind or any other suggestions?

    Re: Uniform Question

Got my uniform tonight. Had choice of white or black pants and a t shirt. We are required to wear them to all classes. Also have a choice to wear wrestling shoes or just socks. Finally, all guys have to wear a cup, and a learned why even in my second class.

    Re: Comfortable Groin Protection

I am taking my first Krav Maga class this week. Was surprised that even in a beginner’s class men are required to wear a cup. Can you really get kicked in a beginning class? How intense do they get?

Anyway, I bought a basic Shock Doctor cup, nothing fancy or specifically designed for martial arts. Is this sufficient?

    Thanks.
