    Re: Eye Contact

I like to give a quick eyeball to people who may be a threat – at least they know I see them – and then keep them in the peripheral.

If you wanna keep an eye on someone without being too obvious about it, have a quick look around for a reflection of them in a window (or similar). Chances are that you can watch their reflection directly without them knowing it.

Works nice for that hot babe in the gym too.

    Re: Weapons, Concealed and Otherwise

OK, first up, I never intended, and do not intend, to insult anyone here.

I was, and am, genuinely shocked at the number of people – Krav-trained people – who feel the need to arm themselves, inside thewir homes and out. That’s NOT a reflection on them (you) but it is an indication on how safe they (you) feel. Despite several visits to the US (never once felt threatened or in danger), and despite having stacks of friends in the US, I never knew that this was prevalent.

I have never been a victim of a home invasion, a car jacking or a hold-up – all three are rare here. Despite seeing fights at the pub, I’ve never seen a knife or gun produced. I wouldn’t even know how to go about getting a gun. Knife and gun assault are still rare in Australia (although a knife culture is growing).

: “Your comment didn’t add any value to the discussion. All you did was insult people who never insulted you.”. I’m buying that, and I’m apologising for it – a clumsily worded post. Again, never my intention.

Having read the responses above, I’m really glad I’m not living in America. That you feel the need to arm yourselves thus is a sad indictment on your society.

Re: Is Rank Important to You?

Not worried about grading, although I’ll get P1-graded before the end of the year. I train with people up to P4 and do everything they do (it’s a small group).

Grading is good feedback and gives that sense of accomplishment, but I’m there to learn how to look after myself and my family and there’s no grading for that.

Re: D.J. dies from Krav Maga injury?

This is just enormously sad and I feel not only for his family and friends left behind but also (if it’s the case) for the training partner who may have inflicted a fatal injury – they will be adversely changed forever.

Those we train with do us a significant personal service in training with us, as we do them. That a fatal accident has happened in our training is just unspeakably tragic.

    RIP Grand Master.

    Re: Large Class Small Class

    Nice horns!

My class varies from a low of 4 or 5 in winter to a high of up to 25 in warmer months.

I probably learn just as much in the bigger classes as the smaller but I reckon the bigger classes are more fun.

Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

    Knife defense at various distances.

One thing we did was that we put our shin guards on our forearms and had our partners knife attack us as hard as they could (bare fisted tho, without the knife) to get a feel for the force of a furious knife attack. Interesting!

Also did stick defenses from various angles (which I’m not good yet at because of the number of scenarios and defense options).

Eyes closed drill – attacked by one of three attackers with sticks, attacking from different angles.

Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

    Last night we did
    * exhaustion drills on tombstone pad – punching, elbows, knees, all three – 45 seconds of each
    * inside defense work (which I’m pretty ordinary at)
    * fighting 2 opponents (6 to 8 strikes on BG1 while sighting BG2, move to BG2 without giving your back to BG1, 6 to 8 strikes on BG2)
    * slow fighting.

    Awesome thread!

Re: This is why KM is important!

An interesting editorial related to Melbournes violence & related problems can be found here:

    http://www.theage.com.au/national/pack-mentality-20090716-dmy0.html

Along with an increase in general violence over here, there is also an increase in knife-related crime.

Now, more than ever, the importance of Krav (and reality based training in general) cannot be understated.

    Peace & safety.

    Re: Level Testing Eligibility

I’m in a similar situation. I’ve been training for a while and my technique is pretty good but I’ve not been invited to test. Yet.

Although getting tested is good feedback, I’m not concerned about the lack of it in my case. I’m part of a small group of guys, mixed levels, and we all train the same techniques. Gradings only happen twice a year. I’m learning the basics as well as stuff well beyond P1 and, most importantly, I’m enjoying my training.

I’m doing Krav for my own safety (and those I love) so it’s exposure to the techniques I’m after. If the lack of testing was preventing my Krav development, then I’d be disappointed. In my case, fact is that it isn’t.

Put simply, the ME of today would beat the crap outta the ME of 12 months ago!

Re: Did anyone else feel dumb at there first class?

In order to be old and wise, you must first be young and stupid.

    Hang in there mate!
