Are you looking into fitness programs to try out? With so many options out there it can be quite a challenge to find the right one. Here are some of our top tips to help you narrow down your options and find the right fitness program for you:
It All Starts With You
Before you can even begin to assess a fitness program, it all starts with you. What are your goals? What do you want to achieve from a fitness program? Not all programs are created equal and not all programs are a “one size fits all.” Depending on what you’re looking to achieve, some programs may be better suited for you than others. To get started, we suggest that you jot down a list of your top 5 priorities. What do you wish to achieve? Here’s an example list:
- Finding a workout program that I generally enjoy
- Lose weight (about 10 lbs)
- Improve general health (Have more energy, feel more rested, feel stronger and fitter, etc.)
- Improve my flexibility
- Improve upper body strength
Notice the last two items on our example list. Improving flexibility is a big component of a yoga class, so perhaps if this was your list you’d want to consider yoga. Looking at goal number 5 on the list, you may want to consider weight lifting a few days of the week to improve your upper body strength. Your list will help clarify what types of fitness programs might be most beneficial to help you achieve your goals.
Consider the environment when you are choosing a fitness program. Do gyms tend to make you feel uncomfortable? Will your discomfort affect your ability to workout effectively? If so, exercising in a gym setting may not be for you. Perhaps you’d feel more comfortable exercising in the comfort of your own home. If that is the case, it might be most beneficial for you to purchase some of the most pertinent items you’d need to do your chosen workout. You don’t want any obstacles in your way on your journey to a greater level of fitness.
No matter what program you choose, don’t forget about how important nutrition is. Nutrition is your body’s fuel, so make sure you are providing your body with enough fuel to help sustain it during your workouts. Vigorous exercising, for example, may require an increase in your daily caloric intake, so you want to make sure you are getting enough food in your system to be able to perform your best when you workout.
The Right Challenge for You
The workout program you choose should be the right challenge for you. This means the program of your choice should challenge you in just the right way. Yes, you should break a sweat. Yes, you should feel challenged at multiple points during your workout. On the other hand, if you were to choose a fitness program that was too difficult, you risk injuring yourself. If you choose a workout that is too easy you may not see the results you’re looking for. The right challenge will help build up your body and make you physically stronger.
