It can be difficult to find the right Krav Maga school, class, and teacher. Whether you’re a beginner or have some prior experience, finding the right teacher is important to ensure that you are able to continually make progress. Check out our tips on how to find the right Krav Maga teacher for you.

Get Recommendations

If you have friends or family taking Krav Maga classes, we suggest utilizing them to help provide references. Perhaps they have a great teacher in mind to help you cut down on some of the guess work when you’re looking for an instructor. Recommendations, especially when coming from friends and family, tend to be a trusted referral source. With this you can ask your friends and family what they like about the instructor, the class and any other questions that might help you make your choice.

While we don’t whole-heartedly recommend this, it’s not a bad idea to do some research about a teacher online first. Google your potential teacher’s name and see what types of recommendations are left from current and previous students and seek articles that may mention your instructor. Of course, a word of caution: don’t believe everything you read online. Take the reviews online and try to get a feel for what you could possibly expect taking a course with the instructor.

Experience and Certifications

When you’re looking for a Krav Maga teacher, consider their experience and certifications. What experience do they have in teaching Krav Maga? What certifications do they hold? What is their background like? Looking at an instructor’s experiences and certifications will help you gauge their overall expertise and ability to properly train you. This is not to say that someone that is newer to Krav Maga wouldn’t be a good teacher, but perhaps their expertise does not lie in training a beginner. This is where you may want to do a little more research to find a teacher who specializes in training beginners.

Maintains a Safe Class Environment

If you are able to observe a class with an instructor by all means we urge you to do so. This will help give you some insight into their teaching methods and help you observe the overall class environment. The best teachers always maintain a safe class environment where students are well-informed of proper Krav Maga techniques. The techniques taught to students should be taught through effective and realistic scenarios.

Speak to an Instructor Before Signing up for a Class

Some instructors will willingly answer any questions you may have before signing up for a class. Before speaking to an instructor compile a list of questions that you may want to ask to help get a feel for what you can expect from an instructor. A pre-class conversation might be just what you need to help you determine whether you’d like to take an instructor’s class or not.

Finding the right Krav Maga teacher can be a good challenge, but doing your research beforehand should help you find the teacher for you.
