Level training usually takes on the form of working to achieve that next belt. Working to achieve the next level is highly dependent on how far along you are in your training. Here’s what you need to know about the levels of Krav Maga.

Levels of Krav Maga: Belts System

As students progress in their training they are awarded a belt after they have completed a level of training. Belts are a major sign of a student’s success in Krav Maga as they are a mark of progression. Each level has its own difficulties, so as a student goes from one level to the next, they can expect the level of difficulty to change.

What Does Each Belt Signify?

Each belt signifies a different level of training and takes its own amount of time to achieve. The time it takes to master each level is always an estimate as each student will advance at their own pace. Individual readiness plays a large role in how long it takes for a student to advance.

  • Level 1: Testing for Yellow Belt Level (About four months)
  • Level 2: Testing for Orange Belt Level (About six months)
  • Level 3: Testing for Green Belt Level  (About nine months)
  • Level 4: Testing for Blue Belt Level (About nine months)
  • Level 5: Testing for Brown and Black Belt Level (About twelve months)

Black belt testing is typically available by invitation only. To be considered for a black belt, 12 months of training for a brown belt is often required.

Progressing Through the Levels of Krav Maga

Progressing through the levels of Krav Maga is not easy, but it is certainly attainable. With hard work and commitment to practicing and training, students are able to graduate from one belt level to the next. While it may take awhile for a student to go from one level to the next, the power of persistence and hard work does pay off. For students looking to progress, here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Practice, Practice, Practice!: The more the better. The more you are willing to put into your training, the more you will get out of it.
  • Perfect the Moves: Don’t just stop at learning a move and practicing it a few times. Perfect each move and make sure you are committed to proper form.
  • Study Buddies: If you feel like you would practice more efficiently with a partner, ask someone in class to practice with you.

Working the levels of Krav Maga can feel tedious, challenging, and exhausting, but one thing to keep in mind is that the ranking system is meant to maintain the integrity of Krav Maga. It ensures that each student is 100% prepared to move on from one belt level to the next.
