It seems as though my last thread lit a bit of a fire. Some have no reason to carry any additional weaponry, others feel a need to effect a complete “Load Out”.

One person brought up a good point: What is the difference?”

Why does one individual feel the need to carry a weapon while the next person is completely comfortable without?

Situations, personalities, circumstances…….everyone has a different set of variables.

    What are your variables?
Why do you carry a weapon, or choose not to carry a weapon?

Re: What you carry and why.

I personally have decided to carry the burden of CCW for my family. At the end of the day, my wife needs a husband, and my children need a father. That may be a bit romantic, but the flip-side of that coin is practicality. I need to be here for my family….we need each other.

There are too many whack-jobs out there. Too many shootings in public places. Too much distance btwn the shooter and the victims for any SD training to be effective in disarming the perpetrator. How can I protect my family if this happens around us?

Personally, I enjoy all aspects of firearms. I collect, refurbish antiques, reload, hunt, and plink. Some day I hope to compete at Camp Perry. Becoming a gunsmith may be an endeavor some day. Rifles fascinate me, as do pistols, shotties, and antiques. My entire collection has one common trait: All of them are functional. They all have a purpose. They are kept for hunting, competition, or self-defense.

I look at self-defense this way.

With H2H I can defend close range.
With a pistol, I can defend out to 30-75 yds (effectively).
With a shotgun, I can defend out to 50-100 yds depending on the load.
With a rifle, out to 1000 yds.

Weapons are tools in my estimation. No more, no less. Knowyour tools. Take care of your tools. Live your life.

    Just my 2 cents.

I carry a blade as both a tool and a weapon if needed. I have used it many times as a tool and so far never as a weapon. As to why I think it comes down to past experiences and how you feel about violence. I have been involved in plenty of fights growing up and never felt the need to stab or shoot during or after the fight.

However in a street/bar/alley confrontation if the odds are 3 to 1 and they have weapons all bets are off and you have to be able and willing to do what it takes to survive. Sometimes a weapon helps even those odds at least a little, but only if you are willing and able to use it. It does no good to carry a weapon you won’t/can’t use.

Sometimes I just carry the husband… Trouble hits- I just wind him up, set him down and point him in the direction of trouble, then let go. But he gets heavy at times, so sometimes I just carry my gun. 🙂

I’m a big believer in force options. At any given time (off duty) I will have at least one gun with a reload (sometimes two), two knives, a Surefire pen and a Surefire flashlight. It’s only overkill until you need it, then it’s not enough. Obviously, if it gets really hot, options change. If I’m swimming, I have stainless steel guns.

I always have a Cold steel push dagger on me. Sometimes a neck knife as well along with my utility knife which may be small but it can do some damage in a pinch. I chose the push dagger for the instinctual aspect of it. It doesnt take any training to use it and it is a wide sahrp blade.

I carry a pocket knife for practicality. I mostly use it for cutting boxes at work, or doing other such common tasks. However, when selecting a knife I intentionally picked one out that I could use as a weapon if needed. I don’t expect to have to use it as such, but it’s nice to know it’s there.

That’s funny. My old partner from the hospital got into a joking discussion with her husband about kicking his butt. He said she couldn’ t beat him with all the weapons on her belt. She said he may be right but she could if she had her Andy. They laughed so hard, they had a shirt made for me. It says “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY, BREAK GLASS, RELEASE ANDY” I so treasure that shirt.

Not a LEO and here in NY you can’t carry much so I take with me as much common sense as I can to avoid conflicts.

I dont even think a Kubaton is legal here.

I suppose I could walk around with a baseball bat waiting for a game to pop up ;).
