Work warning- depicts a man getting shot, but I think this is a valuable lesson.

If this isn’t about the worst attempt at a disarm I have ever seen, I don’t know what is…

Be careful out there guys, if you’re not in immediate danger no need to be a hero.

Disturbing video. I agree, he was in no immediate danger. I think we can all learn something from this. Once you commit you need to go all the way like your life depends on it. Redirect, control weapon, counter attack, disarm. It is a shame he never got past step one.

Wow. Yeah, a good reminder that if your going to go… GO!! Nothing in that store is worth dying over so you better think about that first. So sad that is even online, I feel horrible for his family watching a loved one die on youtube type site…

That is beyond a shame. I had to watch it a couple of times…nothing went right unfortunately…

Tried to break it down just for my sake: He started out grabbing at the BG’s arm above the elbow while he was still on his heels, didn’t have his body in position to move forward aggressively and put any leverage on the weapon and even if he did get a hand on the weapon he was not fast enough on his feet to stay close to prevent space from being created and ended up just outside bursting range but not far enough away to dodge/dive for cover.

Definitely reminds you of the stakes, can’t afford to not go 110% every time you train — It is not a game.

Almost as disturbing are the many videos on the web that attempt to teach gun defense. Some may be effective, many appear to be a death wish. Even the effective techniques of KravMaga need to be taught by and practiced with a qualified instructor, again and again and again. All different scenarios, angles, distance, bystanders, etc. You don’t learn this from a youtube video or some joker instructor.

Oh dang – hard to see but did the guy STOP?? That’s the worse thing you can do once you make the decision to disarm:(:

A few weeks ago there was a successful disarm on the History Channel show Gangland, where a guy pointed a gun at a gangster, who charged the gunman, took him down and started kicking him.

Not much time, but a couple of quick comments:

There is no PERFECT defense, and no matter how many times you “train” something, you’ll never really no until “go” time.

Regarding the immediate danger issue, there is no audio and no context. It is possible that the bad guy had already shot someone or gave good reason for those present to believe he was about to (could have been a known MO, personal, et al.) In that case, I would rather attempt a defense when the line of fire is not on me, if I have no exit.

Finally, like others have said, once you’ve made the decision to act, you have to be 100% committed. We would all like to believe our training would allow us to do that, but there is no way to truly know without being there.

    Not Krav?

I call B.S. ! If you mean its not in the KMWW handbook then ok. But that guy used Krav principles. He remained calm. He solved the problem himself. He was aggresive and he was commited to the defense. There is far too much “this is Krav” and “That is not Krav”. Krav Maga is supposed to be an open system. We must not forget this.

I don’t care how many times you practice it is not going to be smooth in actuality. It won’t. So practice hard and practice consistently but don’t believe that the actual event will be as smooth as practice is.

I missed the second clip, but now that I’ve seen it, I agree wholeheartedly with Psyops…

Re Psyops’s comment that the guy in 2nd post remained calm – that is frankly what struck me first as I watched the clip. I would not be surprised if he had some training – he was definitely one cool customer. No doubt he was scared but he did not allow that to overwhelm his reaction.
