    Hi all,

Had another “real” use of Krav Maga at work last night – I’m the Night Shift Security Supervisor at a Hospital, and so we frequently deal with drunk and violent patients.

This one particular patient had been brought in drunk, and was waiting for a ride home from his friends so we could discharge him – his whole stay he’d been belligerent to staff members, nothing physical, but plenty of cussing and name calling (particularly to us “rentacops”).

So his friends arrived, and we escorted them to their vehicle, and they drove off into the night with him hanging out the window threatening to “kick your ass” next time he saw me.

Unfortunately, he’d left a few things in the ER, and came back in again…I escorted him and his friend up there, returned his belongings, walked them out again…but just as we got out of the hospital entrance, he stopped, and started cussing at me again. I advised him that he was trespassed from hospital property, and needed to leave right now.

He then made a grab for me, I managed to block and trap the arm, and grabbed his shoulder with my other hand to go for a takedown – he attempted to knee me which I dodged by moving back and to the side (while still holding onto him) and then went in for a knee of my own which I think gave a glancing blow, and then with the hand on his shoulder, hammerstruck him in the neck/side of the head, which caused him to fall away from me. At this point he hightailed it away from the hospital, while I radioed for backup, and were able to give the cops his last known direction of travel…the great thing was that we had all of his information such as address etc too, so I made sure that was passed on 😉

Watched the replay on the camera footage, and it’s definitely obvious he makes the first move, and there was another staff member nearby who witnessed the whole thing and said she’d give a statement that he was the aggressive party. I was a little worried when the cops interviewed and asked “So he didn’t manage to land a blow on you, and you managed to hit him a couple of times?”…I replied in the affirmative, and they just said “Good job! Unfortunately we can’t charge him with assault as that requires actual physical contact, but it’s good you definately taught him a lesson”

It probably helps that we have a very good working relationship with local law enforcement, as they see us as being one of the more professional security outfits – not wannabes or jacketfillers.

Anyhow, definitely happy with the overall result, and I definitely think the KM training helped immensely!

Well done, Armitage! Great situational awareness on your part, too. I love stories with happy endings! From a cop’s perspective, we know that we can’t be everywhere all the time, so we appreciate our fellow sheepdogs who can protect the flock. Glad things went the way they did!

I’m glad that everything worked out for you, sounds like you had your wits about you.

I have a question about the incident that maybe some of the officers here may be able to answer:

You said you were told by the police that they couldn’t charge your assailant with assault because he never hit you. I always thought that assault was the actions that led to the altercation, and that actually hitting someone was battery.

    Is that not correct?

I thought if he even put his hand on you..it was assault.

In my state, we could have summonsed the bad guy into court for assault and battery charges. Once the bad guy touched him, it was a battery.

    WTG Armitage!

RE: physical altercation related crimes, YMMV. For example, in CA:

CA Penal Code 240. An assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with a present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another.

(there does NOT have to be contact made for assault)

CA Penal Code 242. A battery is any willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another.

(and FYI the 245 PC sections govern assault with a deadly weapon or force likely to cause great bodily injury)

There’s more to it than that but basically different places have different terminology and definitions and elements for their crimes.

    Thanx Don!

So assault is an attempt, and once there is physical contact, then it’s battery.

    Gotcha.

You’re welcome guys. FWIW, IMO, it’s easier to find a cop online when you need one than IRL… thumbsup

Nice I love post which tells real lf use of what we train. Or rl situations in which Krav would have possibly helped.

Nice armitage, good “lessons learned” for your next Krav class.
