These sites claim up front to be generalizations. Especially the measurement one can easily be fudged simply by sucking in your stomach or tensing your neck. But what’s the point in that if you’re simply doing it to get some idea where you’re at right now. These helped me to kind of figure out where I need to head for. Obviously, for something more accurate please consult a doctor.
To calculate your Body Fat Index based on the Navy and YMCA systems use: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/bfb (Please notice that it will tell you that it could be off by as much as 3%.)
To figure out what exactly that means take a look at: http://www.healthchecksystems.com/bodyfat.htm
P.S. DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER!!!

These are nice tools. It’s better than BMI in my opinion because BMI is so limited. If you input the measurements of football players, they’d be all overweight!
There are also body fat scales. Haven’t touch one in years but I remember that my percentage fluctuated, depending on my level of hydration. Some scales also offers an athletic mode. I don’t know what the difference is thoughAugust 31, 2008 at 4:04 pm #69529panphageMemberRe: Body Fat Index
If you want accurate measurements don’t bother with on-line calculators or the Tanista scales. Pick up a set of good skin fold calipers. The Slim Guide ones are some of the best low cost ones ($20 or so). Amazon sells them at http://www.amazon.com/Slim-Guide-Skin-Fold-Caliper/dp/B000172G1I
