    Hi…

Does anyone have a good descriptive name for Krav???

Here and there, people have asked how I stay in shape. If you say “Martial Arts” they start throwing Karate chops like a bunch of fools. If you say “Combat Style Fighting”, people think you’re training to be the next Timothy VcVeigh. If you say “Self Defense Training” they look at you like some kind of vigilante that should be wearing a red beret on a NYC subway train. Or worse yet, they look at you like “Oh, Poor Guy… Did Somebody Make You Squeal Like A Pig?”.

If you say, “A Type of Boxing”, people start talking slowly and use smaller words -assuming you’re punch drunk and cant really communicate anymore.

The thought of saying “Well, I Do Something Similar to MMA Fighting” never enters my mind.

If you say “Krav Maga”, then you gotta go through the whole story about Imi Lichtenfeld and a form of fighting adopted by the Israeli Secret Police etc… This is all fine and well but then, people think you’re some kind of wannabe military operative hit man.

So, what’s a good descriptive word or simple phrase for Krav?

A guy at work today asked me about staying fit and my response was: Meet me Saturday morning at 11:30 at a place called Krav Maga Columbia, Maryland and I’ll escort you through an intro class (I’m almost 100% certain he’ll show up too thumbsup). Unfortunately, that’s a very long sentence and doesn’t meet the brevity requirement.

Great question, RFC. Hmmmm… I’ll be pondering this. Usually one of my friends will answer for me: “It’s that psycho-killer stuff that Tuna does where you get kicked in the junk a lot…”

Yeah, I could use a better description, too.

I ask if they’ve heard of it, and if not, just say it’s a self-defense system created by the Israeli military.

“reality based self-defense” is a good term.

I also don’t have a problem with calling it MMA, as it is a system containing Mixed Martial Arts.

I would have to go along with CJ’s Dad and AviatorDave. I just expalin that it’s a reality based self defense system used by Israeli military that has been adapted for civilian use. And that it provides great physical conditioning while teaching you how to defend yourself. I don’t go into great detail about how Imi founded it. If they want toknow more about it, I refer them to the website and the forum.

Seriously, if I think the person has a serious interest in possibly training I explain Krav Maga. If they are just asking how I train, I usually say boxing with other stuff thrown in.
