Today’s Baltimore Sun newspaper ran a syndicated column called ‘People’s Pharmacy”.

It said that several of their readers reported muscle soreness & cramping after drinking Earl Grey tea.Just like reported in the medical juornal ‘The Lancet’,April27,2002.

Earl Grey tea is flavored with oil from the citrus fruit bergamot. This oil contains bergapten,a natural compound that can block the flow of potassium in & out of cell, leading to muscle-cramps in people over sensitive to it.

    Actually,

Caffeine can lead to cramps because it dehydrates the body. I learned about this many moons ago. But it is true. Tea is often times up to 3x’s as caffeinated as coffee or soda. So you can imagine the issues this causes.

    Additionally,

    quote :

    Myth: Caffeine causes dehydration.

Fact: Caffeine-containing beverages contribute to an individualís daily total water intake. Although caffeine is a mild diuretic, the urinary output effects attributed to caffeine have been exaggerated. In fact, urinary output is usually offset by the liquid consumed. Research now shows that coffee, tea, and other caffeine-containing beverages do not negatively affect indicators of hydration in those who are accustomed to consuming caffeine.

We’ve beat the topic of caffeine and sports performance to death in the past. I recommend Google, and am not eliminating caffeine from my diet based on current research when it comes to exercise. But that’s just me.:)

    I know.

Caffeine is a vital part of my diet. In moderation all things are good. My personal experience is though that I experienced less dehydration when my caffeine intake was lower.
