Hi all. New to these boards. I mostly train in Krav at a place near my primary home base (Long Island, NY), Michael Blitz’s KMLI–I’m sure any of you visiting the area would be welcome.

A few months back, I underwent shoulder surgery from a Krav-related injury. Typical stuff–partially torn rotator cuff, torn biceps tendon. I’ve been doing PT here at home since the operation, but recovery has not been quite as swift as I’d hoped.

Now I’m heading out to my secondary home base (Las Vegas) for two months, starting around Memorial Day. I need to find a good PT place where I can continue pursuing my rehab–unfortunately I can’t seem to figure out which are the “good” ones (the sports medicine type ones, I guess) from simple Google searches. I tried sending the Vegas Krav school an email asking for help, but got no response. I also tried calling the Vegas minor league baseball team for a referral–they were unwilling to share their information with me, for whatever reason.

I’m hoping someone on these forums might have a useful recommendation, or even a suggestion on where else I might look for ideas. At the moment, I’m more or less stumped.

Appreciate any help anyone might be able to give here. I occasionally make it out to LA, and have trained with some of you before also, and hope to do so again, once I get through with my rehab. Thanks for any help.

I haven’t been through shoulder surgery (yet) but I’m ASSuming the recovery/rehab is pretty similar to getting your range of motion back and then slowly strengthening. Not sure how far along you are. I think you can do a lot at home and with light hand weights. Maybe find a local pool (e.g. YMCA or community college) and do some water-based therapy/exercises (e.g. range of motion exercises with some fluid based resistance or even swimming)… ?

I “THINK” Psyops’ gym is in Vegas. Might try PM’ing him. I don’t know how much he checks in here but might be worth a shot.

you also could drop into one of theGOOD MMA gyms there and see who they send the fighters to. Maybe inquire to the S & C coach at UNLV. Crossfit gym?

    Good luck

Don, you are pretty much right on. I had shoulder surgery a few years back – torn rotator and clavical bone spur. My recovery took about a year because of the extent of the surgery. some I know who have had only rotator surgery have recoved in a month or two.

For me, I went through the PT (pain and torture) theropy but it was mostly to get my flexibility and range of motion back. There was some strength building while at PT, but it was mostly done on my own. My doctor and theropist gave me some rubber bands (they got stronger as I progressed), and a pully mechanism. I would hang the pulley over a door, sit on a chair, grab one handle from the pulley with my hand of my bad shoulder, grab the other handle with my good hand. Using my good arm, I would pull through the pulley to raise and lower my bad arm/shoulder. I done it sideways and fore and aft. This helped greatly to gain my range of motion. Using the pulley set up, you can control the amount of movement to pain relationship. I used the rubber bands while sitting at my desk at work. I had a knot tied in one end that I put in a desk drawer, holding the drawer closed with my foot and exercising my bad arm/shoulder by pulling and releasing the rubber band. As I got stronger, I switched to a stronger band.

I also used a short stick. Lying on my back on the floor, I would grasp the ends of the stick with both hands. Using my good arm, I would lift and move my bad arm up and down and side to side. This also helped my range of motion.

I only had about 6 weeks of physical theropy, after that I worked on my own using the methods above.

A couple years after I got full strentgh and use of my arm, I hurt my other shoulder doing some ground work in Krav. We were doing a forward roll with a partner rolling over him and putting him in an arm bar. Well, I didn’t tuck my head enough and landed on the top of my shoulder. I now have a type 2 AC seperation that I live with.

Re: Good PT facility in Vegas?

    Thanks for suggestions guys.

You all are kind of right in assuming that many of the exercises involved are things I can do at home–and I do. With my current PT regimen, I’m going to the facility 3 times a week, and am expected (and actually do) many of the same exercises at home. I do find the actual “hands-on” experience helps, though. I have a bad tendency to “shrug” the messed-up shoulder for example. The therapist I work with here is very very good, and does a lot of one-on-one work with me. I end up screaming my head off (and scaring off the new patients in the waiting room) but he’s been getting good results—I don’t think I’d be doing nearly as well if I was left totally unsupervised.

I tried sending an email to the Krav place in Vegas asking for suggestions–no response. I called the Vegas minor league baseball team–they refused to divulge whom/what place they use (? What’s the upside in that? Place I go to in NY takes care of local HS and college teams, and they play it to the hilt).

I’ll try UNLV, and see if they have any referrals to make. Thanks again.
