I was checking out Greg Jackson’s Stand Up Game for some striking combos that I may use in sparring. The very last chapter of the book is on street fighting (which took me by surprise). One scenario that he addressed was the two hand shove. Seems like a lot of fights start out with some tough guy getting in your face and giving you a good hard push. Has anyone done a drill with this situation?

i got into a minor altercation shortly after taking up Krav – the guy gave me the two hand shove and i instinctively (probably b/c we had just drilled it for an hour the night before) did an inside defense with counter. the counter was a little weak but the inside defense put him off balance so my follow up was quite effective.

Nice. Although many of the tecniques in the book were a little more complicated than KM (mainly weapon defenses), I like the two hand shove defense. It was a simple redirect with a right cross counter. There was one that also put you in a Thai clinch to deliver strikes.

I think the inside defense would work. What about a front kick? I figure if you’re pushed back to the point where you have to take a step back, the front kick would work.

Couldn’t you just do the defense against choke from the front?

Probably not against a shove as it is since the shover’s hands aren’t maintaining contact with your body for a significant length of time. An inside defense would work well because a shove is almost like a slow palm-heel strike to your chest or clavicle. And since a shove relies on bodyweight over technique, an inside defense would definitely throw the shover off balance and right into your fist or elbow. Sucks for them. 🙂

Bas’ loading defense would be my first thought on a hard shove where I am forced to use mid-close range combatives. It’s similar to an inside defense, but a little bit stronger-hence its loading the alternate hand for a straight. Depending on the situation, a choke to the front with a shove defense if I can make an early defense… a lot of variables, but also a lot of options. .02

There probably are a lot of different things that you can do in that situation. Probably best to walk away if the option is available. Just wondering if anyone’s ever done a drill using this confrontation. I haven’t in the 2+ years of taking KM.
