Anyone here do much pistol shooting. I’ll probably be going to the range this weekend which I only do a couple a few times a year. I mostly just line up my sights and shoot but I’d like to start working on the Point Shooting method.
Anyone practice point shooting and have any tips for the range or particular drills they do at the range?
Thanks

Get your front sight on target and fire. Don’t bother lining up the sights. Did some CQB training recently and the front sight on target is still pretty accurate.

Another tip was to practice P/S with airsoft to get the motion and grip down and save money on ammo.
I’m going to practice some at the range today.
Thanks for the replies.

I’m surprised Stafford hasn’t replied to this yet, he’s an LE range master, and I think TJ is as well.
You might want to PM them a link to this thread.

.Too bad you already decided you can’t do it;): Roger is a Point shooting specialist for Gabe Suarez’s company. Great stuff. Other thing you could do is take a FOF at one of Gabes’ trainings. They’ve been rewritting the book on this stuff with guys like Yeager as well. The thing is like anything else is to learn the fundamentals correctly at the beginning. Saves a lot of reconditioning later. Learn it right the first time. I think Roger may have some videos up yet on youtube. I guess you can learn it from a book but the source needs to be good. And ofcourse you have the problem that few ranges allow you to move while shooting

One of the few things we have out here in the country: Gun Range, Ammo shop, bait shop……meth labs too.
I am usually at the range every weekend. The only tips I can give is to not hold your breath. I really don’t know what that does but I think it is just all mental. When I first started shooting I was all over the place. Now its just natural and I can “draw” happy faces. Yeah, I think that typing this out it makes sense, it mental. I know when I hold my breath when I pull the trigger it signals that I am uneasy.
The only other advise is to pull the trigger when the business end is pointed at the target and not your foot. 😛

Going to Vegas for pistol training is just not an option my darling wife would go for. But I agree with you practice and training. I had fun at the range today with my brother in law who is a local LEO. He gave me some good tips but I’m looking into some training.
There is also a local defensive shooters club in Kansas that has open matches open to novices which i’m going to check out at the end of the month.
The pistol training I received in the Army…YEARS ago was somewhat lacking. I’m not a bad shot but I would like to become more proficient. Like you said practice, practice practice.
Thanks

Whatever you do, do it alot and do it safely.
There are tons of articles and nothing beats practice and hands on training from a good instructor.
I’m sure even the most qualified person has had an accidental discharge. If you remember to keep it pointed down range you’ll be fine.
I had an idiot try point shooting with an IPSC Benelli shotgun. As the gun was on the table pointed down range (loaded). He walked away. I was helping someone else when I turned around to hear the boom and drop sound. His partner had walked up and grabbed the shotgun and the index finger went out of control into the trigger guard. I know the friends wrist had to be killing him. My response was “you’re either tough or stupid, which one”
This also explains why some ranges have steel lining between stalls.
I explained the incident to the range master, my brother, and he told them to pack it in.

I didn’t take your comment negatively. No sweat. thumbsupI totally understand finacial considerations. its part of the reason I do kenpo and not krav. I apologize for not understanding the wife thing. I’m pretty independent and would never ask someone else permission to do something I wanted to do. Probably the reason I never wanted to marry. But I understand your reasoning.;):
I wish you the best in your training:D:
