I have participated on a Krav Maga VIP Protection course. (18 days with Eyal Yanilov…) I have to say, krav maga is an amaizing VIP Prot. tool. Do you guys have any experience using or practising KM for VIP Prot. needs?

I’ve done a 2 day protection seminar with Eyal in november.
I’m into security and would definettely use what I’ve learned.

Can you tell me more about the 18 day course? Is it just the fighting aspects of close protection or is it a complete or at least all-round course?

for example,,, does it also imply guarding the privacy of the VIP, project management (trips etc. ) ,etc. etc. ?

    Hi,

This was a 4 level – after 18 days you can get the first, they call it bronze shield. (What was amazing they brought specialist from Israel – like Mr. Samula Bashan, who was No.1 bodygurad of several Israeli Prime Ministers, and he is also expert in bombs and flight security.)

That was the schedule of the 18 days:

    Lectures Contents

    * V.I.P. protection. General purposes, background and goals
    * Documentary film(s) (assassinations and attempts), followed by a short discussion and brainstorming about the actual event(s)
    * Procedures; principles; Behavior of the officer
    * Securing an installation; Basic simulations
    * Equipment and gear; First aid; Emergency response
    * Manners and behavior as the foundations to employment
    * Summery and forward to the advanced section of the course

    Entry test

    * Fitness, stamina and power test
    * Coordination, learning speed, capability and comprehension test

    Krav-Maga

    * Attacks:
    o Basic attacks
    o Counterattacks
o Attacks with firearm as a blunt object
o Interchanging between firearms and basic KM techniques
o Attacks when a third party is involved
    * Defending oneself:
    o Against basic attacks (1)
    o Against dangerous grabs (1)
    o Armed assault(1)
    o Armed threats (1)
    o Moving the VIP (1)
    * Defending the VIP against:
o Basic attack or grab (1)
    o Knife attack (1)
    o Knife threat (1)
    o Pistol threat (1)
    * Dealing with different incidents when VIP is:
o Near or inside a car
o In a confined area (room, corridor)
    o Among crowd
    * Mental training and preparation –
    o Aggression; Determination
o Courage; Overcoming or ignoring danger in-order to defend others.

Firearms (the introductory course include 5 session with firearms)

    * Dry drill (1) – safety and security in training and in routine, carrying a firearm, general behavior and more A session with the firearm includes a segment of 2 hours dry drill and 2-4 hours live fire. The goal to reach is training with a VIP in a shooting range in static situations
    * Session 1 – Holding the pistol and shooting with one hand
    * Session 2 – Enhancing abilities and the draw and shooting with 2 hands
    * Session 3 – Enhancing abilities and turning
    * Session 4 – Enhancing abilities and working with a VIP
    * Session 5 – Simulations and summerizing drills

    brogers,

I do not understand your remark. May I ask why do you think this way?

    Hey kmman!

The VIP protection learned in regular class usually just involves gun threats. The attacker might point a gun from the front or from behind at another person, you are walking or standing next to that person and then jump in and redirect the gun, counter and take it (or take it first, then counter, depending on position). We don’t practice it very often, just once in a while.

    Giantkiller,

OK, that is not bad, altough less than I thought.

In Europe we will have this year VIP protection, military and law enforcement training as well. I guess these are giving a wider angle from Krav Maga. (BTW the law enforcement instructor course – two weeks – will be in Budapest/Hungary.)

We also have a law enforcement class once a month. I’m not sure what they are learning in that one, could be that they do more VIP protection in there. I also believe we have some special seminars or train some groups outside the NTC, where they might focus more on things like that.

But in regular classes we don’t do that much. although I think it’s really interesting. Could be that you are walking with a friend, who doesn’t know gun defenses and you need to jump in, so it’s not really that far fetched. I don’t think we have ever talked about knife threats to a third party, but I assume it’s somewhat similar to gun threats?

    Giantkiller,

(We will have a 14 days LE instructor course, and a 21 days Military instructor course here with Eyal Yanilov.)

    Ok, VIP Prot. techniques.

The beauty in KM, you almost using same stuff, except defending yourself is very instinctive, while defending others is not. You also need some other way of thinking, because you can not redirect the line of fire of your friend. So, the technique can be good, but doing in the wrong direction still cause injury or death. Same with knife – threat or attack is a bit different. In VIP situation you must be also able to use the tech. form any angle – from the back of the attacker, side form the VIP etc. – and that need creative problem solving type of thinking.

We went trough a 14 days of VIP course with the finest israeli bodyguards, shooting instructors, bomb experts, KM experts and antiterrorist experts. After that, you get a better picture of the whole system. So, I beleive, KM is greater than I thought…:)

    gimgam,

Ask Franklyn about the price, he is the country director in Holland. He was with me, although he was participating on the military instructor seminar…Great guy.

Yes, on the VIP seminar Eyal was teaching most of the time. Sometimes Amnon. Antiterrorist things, bomb searching, shooting were teaching by other experts from Israel. (Like the previous No.1 bodyguard of several Israeli Prime Minister, Mr. Samuel Bashan, or the bodyguard of the israeli ambassador in Russia. Etc.) It was 2×7 days, the second part with the Ist Commando regiment in Poland. (They currently in Iraq, they all do Krav Maga…)

LE seminar will be held in Imi’s birthplace, Budapest in April…

So how would you defend if another person is being stabbed? Seems like you couldn’t really do a 360 defense if another person is being targeted. Or would you still use it, kind of as a shield and then try to grab the attacker’s arm? If you are an actual bodyguard I guess you would carry a gun and could just shoot the attacker. But what if you are a regular person and don’t have a weapon? Maybe you could pick up something from the environment. If not, would you try to push the victim out of the way, then deal with the attacker (could be dangerous). Or push the attacker? Or, if he isn’t paying any attention to you, just to the person he is stabbing, maybe you could get to his back, attack him from there (maybe safer)? Did you learn anything about that at that seminar?

    Giantkiller,

    It depends on the:
    – type of the weapon
    – distance from the attacker
    – my position
    – other bodyguards position
    -etc.

Within 5-8 meters, using a firearm is almost impossible, or if it is pulled ou, maybe block and hit with the barrel, then start evacuating.Normally there is not much difference in the used blocking techniques. In the meantime you try to move out the vip from the danger zone, line of fire etc. Pushing out the vip could cause problem – although could be solution as well – because after pushed you are not controlling him or her. In normal – with a friend or girlfriend – you can push the person and say RUN. Ususally you have no time ti disarm the person – not your job – just do everything till the VIP will be safe, and go away. So in this case:
    – Recognizing the attack
    – Move the VIP if needed
    – Block the knife attack and counterattack /In eraly stage even counter with a kick/ If carrying a gun, and shooting is possible, do it. If not, using the barell, if there is no gun, normal hand or leg counterattack
    – controll the vip
    – leave the scene to a secure place while checking the area
    – Arriving to the secure area, check the VIP, if hurt.

It was not a seminar exactly, it was a very intensive bodyguard school of 18 days, with sometimes 12-14 hours of training, shooting, bomb searching, first aid, driving, shooting from a car, defending the VIP from different positions against diff., attacks…etc. It was FUN!
