Re: Should I Learn Krav Maga or….

Remember, you owe more to yourself and your family then you do to your agency! Your goal is to come home alive!

If you violate an agency policy, you can lose your job for sure, but is it worth the risk of losing your life if you don’t.

At the end of the day regardless of Dept. policy, if you end up in court, there is only one standard you’ll be held to legally, and it isn’t your Dept policy!

Follow dept policy as long as it is reasonable to do so, but also know that legally you are allowed to do whatever is reasonable to defend yourself regardless.

    Re: Cross Body Escape

    Scenario:

Officer on his back, gun on right hip

BG in cross body (legs on LEO’s left side) using right hand to reach across and grab LEO’s gun.
    —————————————————————————————————-

Immediately trap BG’s hand on top of gun and push down keeping gun in holster.
Using your left hand, reach across to BG’s right tricep (if BG is wearing long sleeves e.g. jacket) grab the jacket behind the tricep and push BG’s towards your feet, simultaneously shrimping your hips away and your right hip (gun side) to the ground.

The force of you pushing the arm and shrimping your hips away, should release his grip (notice I said should, nothing is 110%). If grip is released, continue to push suspect away (maintain your grip) continue to shrimp coming up to your right elbow, then hand and escape your legs. break contact and escalate.

If grip doesn’t break, BG will still be in an off balance position, continue push, shrimp and escape your legs.

If BG has nothing to grab, place your left thumb, thumb-down into his armpit with your fingers pointing up and laying over BG’s shoulder. This provides a very strong control point.

As far as being concerned with back exposure, there is no threat as long as you maintain control with your left hand.

    Peace!

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Cross Body Escape

If officer is on his back, BG in side control using, trap hand on gun immediately with same side hand, e.g. holster on right hip, use right hand.

*Important – You must do everything you can to ensure that the gun stays trapped in your holster!

If BG is wearing long sleeve clothing such as a jacket, use your left hand to grab the jacket behind the tricep of the arm he is using to grab your weapon. Push him away with your left hand (very important to keep grip of jacket throughout the whole escape), at the same time shrimp your right hip (gun) to the ground. Between the pressure of you pushing his arm and the simultaneous shrimp, he should lose solid position and hopefully the grip on your gun.

Continue to shrimp your legs from under BG’s body to break contact and escalate.

There is no danger of back exposure since you are controlling the arm behind the tricep throught the escape.

If BG is not wearing long sleeves, instead, place your left thumb, thumb down into his armpit, with fingers pointed up and rolling over his shoulder, this provides a good control point.

    Hope this helps.
