Since I train in a KMWW facility I really enjoy and always reference the complete KM book by Levine, but have any of you checked out
Krav Maga – Use of the Human Body as a Weapon Philosophy and Application of Hand to Hand Fighting Training System [Paperback]

Boaz Aviram (not a huge plug, but pasted from amazon.com)

I gotta say if I had to introduce someone too or tried to sell someone on KM I’ll tell them to pick this one up. It’s got allot great information, history, and I really captures the spirit of KM. The author is outspoken and definitely has the creditials to back it up. The guys seems to be a legitamate bad A$$.

That is a weird video, but the dude still has cred from being the 3rd Chief KM instructor of the IDF Fighting Fitness Academy (1st being Imi). To me this makes him one of the true authorities of the art. The visuals, instruction, and practical description really impressed me about book.

    Hi,

With regards to Aviram‘s book did you find it has variations with stick defences when compared to complete KM?

    Re: Great Km Book

In KMWWbook there’s about 3 primary defenses listed with a few variations, the boaz book has a chapter dealing with stick (under club and chain) that’s a little different. He first teaches you how to attack with a club, then defense vs club using another club or “handy object.” Then attacking an opponent armed with club using a club and a kick, defense vs club with bare hands-head shot, defense vs club with bare hands-Side body shot, attacking attacker armed with a club.

With the couple that are dealing with defense, it looks like fairly similar techniques than what’s taught in the KMWW.

I am not saying this is the case here, but just because someone held a certain position, in any field, doesn’t mean they were good at it. There are plenty of examples, throughout history, of folks put into positions that they simply weren’t qualified for (elected or otherwise.)

The book may be great…haven’t seen it. That said, the “weirdness” of the video isn’t as disturbing as the poor techniques that are shown, in my opinion.

I have to agree with Ryan here. I have not seen nor do I own the book. But if I had to base my opinion on the video I would not pursue learning from this particular instructor. I don’t know what the deal is, very sloppy technique and he almost falls over in the first segment due to balance issues. And it doesn’t get better as the video continues. JL

    Re: Great Km Book

judging a mans ability as an instructor in his youth based on a video filmed when he is in his late 40s/50s is kind of lame.
Boaz was very well qualified for his position as Chief Krav Maga instructor for the IDF as he was hand picked by Eli Avikzar to replace him in that position and Eli was hand picked by Imi to replace himself.
He has trained hundreds if not thousands of IDF soldiers in Krav Maga and is in the first Krav Maga book ever written(Fighting Fit).
His technical knowledge is sound but whether he can perform at the same athletic level at this point in his life is neither here nor there and is irrelevant and less important than the historical and technical knowledge he presents in the book.
There are so few books on KM and only two that are written by Israelis who were there in the early days of the system. Everyone should have them.

You putting words in my mouth is lame. Athletic attributes and technical proficiency are not the same. The book may be great; the video is not. Period.

I believe he and Darren actually tested together at some point, and the “he’s Israeli” thing, in my opinion, does not make him a good instructor or practitioner (again, he may be, but that’s not a qualifier in my book.)

By the way, Randy Couture just co-headlined a UFC at the age of 47, so the erroneous argument you make doesn’t even hold up.

That said, I really don’t care either way. Buy the book if you want. It likely has good information in it. As I stated earlier, and stand by, the video is a deterrent to me.

Kevin….don’t get upset over someones opinion on a video! As stated I don’t own the book. But if I had to go by the video on here, I would not buy it either. If the video is used to promote the book then I would venture to re-do the vid. I don’t care if Imi gave him the keys to the frickin’ city. The video is poor at best. Being from Israel doesn’t mean squat, they have their fair share of substandard Instructors too. If the book is helpful in ones quest to learn more about the essence of krav then great. But the video still sucks….bottom-line. Sorry!

I’d say my favorite parts of the book are his written words for the first quarter of the book. The way he decribes the philosophy, history, and fighting science are great.

    Re: Great Km Book

I have taught martial arts / combatives for almost 25 years now and I will say without a doubt my skills are way better now than they were when I started. This guy can’t seem to throw a groin level kick without dropping his hands. Those punches were weak and sloppy. Based on what was shown in this video, my 13 year old would own this guy. I sure hope he taught IDF better than that.

    Re: Great Km Book

That’s the most pathetic KM video I’ve ever seen. That guy looks like he took his first intro to KM class for 1 hr, and then made a video.

    Re: Great Km Book

The video does not do him justice.
I have been in his civilian classes when he visited to guest instruct or observe while I was training in NY in the earlier part of the decade. I have also seen him teach LE classes. He is top notch and not a fake. His instruction has saved countless lives in Israel and around the world. Previously stated above was that he is the soldier on the cover of “fighting fit”. If you get a chance to read the book by Steven Hartov “Heat of Ramadan”, the KM instructor Boaz in the book is based on Boaz.
