I just was looking into this again due to some thinking about things I could carry on me other than a knife or gun.
Have any of you taken a look at some of the items that Cold Steel has been putting out recently? They’re made out of either polypropelene or a substance they call Grivory or Zytel. They have absolutely no metal content (right through a metal detector if I was the type to want to), are cheaper than a normal knife to the point where they’re practically disposable, they’re extremely light weight (making them very easy to conceal in your clothing), and they’re extremely tough. Cold Steel has a reputation for often coming up with very different types of products that nonetheless are very well made. Take a look at some of these links:
http://www.coldsteel.com/92ddc.html – Their Delta Dart (I’ve carried it and like it.)
http://www.coldsteel.com/koga.html – Their koga self defense pair – I don’t really like these, but some would
http://www.coldsteel.com/92hcd.html – Their cruciform dagger
http://www.coldsteel.com/91sp.html – Their really nasty permanent marker made strong enough for SD
http://www.coldsteel.com/nise.html – The Nightshade series – I normally carry the “Skean Dhu” in an inside pocket if I’m in a suit and the “Push Blade II” is in my car right next to the ignition. I am in a suit on a regular basis and I’ve found out that the “Jungle Dart” and the “Delta Dart” both can very easily be concealed underneath the lapels with just a few loops of thread. Put one loop through the hole at the base of the handle and one around the body of the blade. Then when you need it just break the bottom loop.
If you’re interested in these or any other Cold Steel products I’d also advise you to look at ordering them from Smoky Mountain Knife Works in Gatlinburg, TN at http://www.eknifeworks.com/ because they often will have better prices on the same things than the manufacturer will.
On a side note I normally carry a Smith & Wesson HRTMG folder actually on me and use these for strategic placing around my home and car. On a second side note I actually had an older model of one of these accidently in a piece of carry on luggage post-9/11. I got pulled to one side and the lady informed me that I seemed to have a screwdriver in my luggage. I told her to go ahead and search anything that she wanted. When she pulled it out I almost had a heart attack. The only thing that saved me was she couldn’t figure out what it was! I asked her to just throw it away and she finally did.

How about this:

That one is more of a joke, but I was actually looking for an umbrella that is supposed to be a serious self-defense weapon. It’s advertised in BB magazine sometimes. Of course, it’s not much use unless you live in an area where it rains often.
You could also consider regular, everyday items such as a briefcase as self-defense weapons, or at very least use them as a shield. Whatever you choose, it should be readily accessible, such as something attached to your keychain perhaps, or something you can wear as a ring or bracelet or the like.

I just thought, maybe, if you don’t want to carry anything resembling a weapon (because the police might mistake you for the bad guy), you could carry a simple Coke bottle or the like. It doesn’t look suspicious, but if you were attacked, you could use it as an impact weapon and, if it shatters, even as and edged weapon. You would have it in your hand while you are walking, so it would be readily accessible.
Or you could wear some large, heavy rings on your fingers, which could double as brass knuckles if you need to punch someone.

fill the bottom of a football (soccer) sock with coins and you have a pretty good weapon and if you get stopped by the law just empty the coins in your pocket and all you have is a sock and some loose change.

I personally used to carry a bandana with a pad lock tied to the end of it. just stick the lock in your back pocket and let the bandanna hang. things get hairy(only used it once) grab bandanna and start swinging for heads.

I’ve always thought a fire extinguisher would make a handy weapon. Considering I have several in my house and one in the car… You could spray someone in the face with it and then crack them upside the head. Then apply Krav as necessary until their guts are all over the ground. :chair:

I always wear a belt.
A couple of times around them palm and you have about a 12″ extension of your arm. Very effective when facindg a knife threat. I practice wrapping it around the wrist area and pull it toward me in a quick burst. Hard to describe here. Try it on a defense block at your dojo. You know the silly thing that looks like a bpunching bag with arms. Once toyou get pretty fair at it you can use this to defend. I just wish I could give you a better visual.. JL

The sword is a flexible piece of steel that wraps around the inside of the belt, but when you pull it out it stays fairly rigid.
