Has anyone seen the movie yet with Vergio Mortensen (Giant probalby has, he see a lot of movies 😆 ) I was wondering what you think about the defense he used when the bad guy held a gun to the side of his head. It looked like he swung his left arm over the bad guys arm taht was holding the gun. And while locking up the arm, he ridge handed the bad huys throat and then proceeded to bash his face an nose with palm heel strikes.

What do yuou think, would this be an effective technique on the street?

How was the movie? Was it worth seeing?

I have not seen the movie yet, but I heard it’s slow. I usually don’t care what other people say about movies, I go see them anyway because that is their opinion.

You like martial arts movies rent Ong Bok: Thai Warrior. The story sucks but the fighting is unbelievable. Keep in mind in this movie no camera tricks, speed increase, or stuntmen are used. Also Unleashed with Jet Li has killer fights in it too. Very primal, very agressive. I was very impressed with Jet Li for this one…even if he is a camera trick fool.

    BBBrian and Leftie,
It was intertaining at best, and yes, a little slow at times. Would I go see it again – NO. Was I glad I saw it – Yes – because is relieved my courisity from the previews. There was only about three decent fight scenes and the rest of the movie was — well– (Oh, it had to dynamite sex scenes in it that were interesting 😳 )
My wife an I like to go to the movies alot. Sometiomes when she goes out of town I will go to a movie that she would not be interested in seeing. History of Violence was one of them.

    KravRon,
I have to agree on Unleased. I really enjoyed it. Jet Li is always pretty impressive. I haven’t seen Ong Bak yet, but I intend to rent it one of these days. That’s one of those movies my wife has no desire to see, so I didn’t see it in the theater.

Yes, I’ve seen it. I thought it was slow, too. Looked more interesting in the previews. The gun defense was interesting. It might work. I liked the counter, some type of ridge hand to the throat. I guess one could do the same counter with our regular defense. If the gunman was taller, though (long arms), the movie defense would probably be harder to do, since he had him in some kind of armlock hold after the redirection and as he was counter punching and it would be difficult to do that to someone with long arms.

I also liked what happened to the bully and yes, some intense sex stuff… 😯 😳 😉

Giant..do you have any other movies on your list to see? And by the way, what do you do for your job? I’m just curious because you spend a \”lot\” of time on this board (considering the amount of posts you have). I look at this board everyday or every other day but there are certain topics I post questions or reply to.

The last movie I saw was \”North Country\”. It’s about female miners, who face sexual harassment at work and ultimately file a law suit. It’s based on a true story. Not a lot of fighting in that one. I also saw \”In Her Shoes\” and \”Oliver Twist\”. I missed \”Serenity\”, because it was on the same day as the \”Oliver Twist\” screening and I ended up going to that one. \”Elizabethtown\”, \”Shopgirl\” and \”Doom\” are coming up. Too bad there wasn’t a screening for \”Good Night and Good Luck. That one seems interesting.

I work for a press agency based in France. I don’t really spend that much time on the forum. I check in about once a day.

I just saw Hx of Violence. In a word: garbage. Shitty acting, contrived dialogue, misplaced sex scenes (and unnessasarily graphic), and the storyline is utterly retarded. It’s amazing what mixed martial arts mafia dudes are taught these days. I mean, gone are the overfed Tony Sopranos. Nope, now they’re fit and trim, and know gun defenses. 🙄

I’ve seen a little of the \”Ong-Bak\” movie. The techiques seem fancy. Is it Muay Thai with a lot of exotic techniques from other styles (maybe Krabi Krabong, Bando, Silat, etc.) thrown in? If it’s just Muay Thai, the movie won’t sell. I then hooked and browsed at the bonus icon \”Muay Thai movements\”. I was surprised that it didn’t show any basic Muay Thai techniques (stance/footwork/defense like in boxing, jab, cross, hook, elbows, knee strikes, round kicks, push kicks, clinches, etc.). Instead, it showed flowery movements that even I wasn’t familiar with despite previous training in Muay Thai. I might have been missing something. But I wouldn’t discount the fact that their training in Thailand is hardcore, especially what they do with their calloused shins. Frankly, I’d rather still watch \”Kickboxer\”, \”Collateral\”, \”The Hunted\”, and Bruce Lee/vintage Steven Seagal movies. I’m not really into watching martial arts movies utilizing flashy, complicated moves w/special effects thrown in (Blade and Matrix are an exception since they are more of an action genre)), then it’s for you. Then again, it’s just my opinion. Speaking of \”History of Violence\”, maybe I might go check it out.

since no one has answered your question yet….

hey brad. i just saw the movie last night and i really enjoyed it. i was also impressed by viggo’s gun from the side of the head defense. it looked really cool, but is it practical. i don’t think so. the reason being he did not control the gun. from what i saw, with his left hand he did an outside defense block to the gunmans inside arm and then git him into an armbar. it seemed to me that all the assailant had to do was turn his wrist in order to shoot viggo. also look at how complicated all the moves were. thats why i love krav. everything is built simply and on instinct. viggos character had not been an assaisin for twenty odd years it is very doubtful that he would have remebered those complex techniques. had he trained in krav….maybe.

I just saw the movie today. I love it! Planning on buying it once it hit store shelves. I like the fight and gun scenes, which were pretty realistic. Viggo was ruthless and deliberate in his actions! No wasted motion! \”History of Violence\” will be a good addition to the other movies in my collection, \”Collateral\” and \”The Hunted\”. And the pistol disarm he did where he palm slaps someone in the face is very similar to the ones taught from various combatives, maybe Krav. And the situation where his son cleans the school bully’s clock. I almost jumped out the theater seats as if I was cheering at an NHB match. The only turnoff was that the sex scenes, which I never really paid much attention to, almost seemed like a porno flick. Those weren’t really necessary in my opinion.

Alright, another guy cheering when the bully got beat! I really liked that part, but I wonder if that was the filmmaker’s intention. I think they wanted to show how violence only leads to more violence etc and so Viggo’s character actually gets mad at his son for beating the bully. But I liked it, because a bully who gets his ass kicked like that is probably going to think twice before bullying someone else again. 😀

Sorry to get off topic…was \”The Hunted\” the movie with that Del Toro guy and Tommy Lee Jones?

Yes, the \”Hunted\” starred both Jones and Del Toro.
