These ones? How is one “already set up” for home defense applications?

I’m still new to the whole shotgun purchase, are the major differences between the lines things like the stock, barrel, and the accessories?

    Hey Yoshi,

I have this one and like it a lot. It has the short barrel, extended magazine and ghost ring sights. There’s no need for a 3.5″ magnum as an in-home weapon. A 2.75″ target load has plenty of stopping power at across-the-room range, will kick a lot less and is less likely to penetrate multiple walls and kill your neighbor. I’m fine with the factory stock for recoil but you could add a Blackhawk for about $100 if you’re recoil sensitive.

If you’ve decided to go with a shotgun,

    one resource:
    http://www.shotgunworld.com/

Benellis are so good, they shoot themselves…
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5uHt4AwYb4&feature=related

IIRC Tom Knapp was the first to shoot 10 hand thrown clays with a semi-auto (Benelli) shotgun. And, he has also shot 8 (EIGHT!) hand thrown clays with a PUMP Action shotgun (Benelli Nova – $400-500 shotgun). The point is that you can get really good with whatever gun you decide to go with and doesn’t have to be super expensive/trick.

You can get a basic model Mossberg 500/590 for around $300 or a little over (or even under during a Big5 sale). A basic 870 can run you as little as $325-350… I second/third the recommendation for a recoil reducing stock…

In case of zombies though, I’d rather go .223/5.56… 😀

I’ve never used a Nova and can’t comment on them, but Benelli M4 is like a surgical blade for CQB/Home Defense, if you can afford it.

I’d love to have a Benelli. Maybe Don can comment on the stupidest law ever written, the one that classifies a Benelli as an illegal imported assault weapon if the magazine will hold more than 5 rounds. You can work around it by replacing some of the imported parts with US-made parts but what a needless and expensive PITA….

I have a Mossy 500 right now (hand me up from a cousin who moved out of the country) but would love a semi-auto shotty. In agreement with Timmy, a Benelli M4 would be at the top of my semi-auto list. Other guns that I might go for – Benelli M3, Beretta FP1201, Beretta Xtrema 2 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6750458630308006678# , Winchester SX2, etc.

Hey Cat, a lot of weapons laws are stupid IMO. Sometimes they’re poorly written and too open for various interpretations. Sometimes they don’t make much sense. Sometimes they’re not consistent. I haven’t read the Benelli being classified like that before – I’ll check the link out as soon as I have a moment…

Re: Krav Maga and being safe at home

Last I heard, they tried to do that but it ended up getting shot down. The Beretta TX4 looks like it would be a good option, but I don’t know of a whole lot of parts for it OTHER than what Beretta sells.

    quote TacticalTimmy:

Check the 870 tactical models on Remington’s website, and consider upgrading with a blackhawk Knoxx recoil reducing stock. May have to purchase separately. If you can Ghost ring sights, do it, much cheaper to buy than to add on. Not familiar with the Mossbergs that much, but I have not heard anything bad either. Could also go with a Remington 887 Nitromag, already set up for home defense, use and the tacticals should be in your price range.

FWIW, bought the 870 tactical with the BlackOps stock last month. I highly recommend. I use 00 buck for home defense.
