    Re: Krav maga getting bashed?

Yawn. Ever notice that anything anyone else does is inferior to what someone else does. whether it be Krav, bjj, politics, religion or anything else that requires a friken opinion.

The only way a human can really make a decision is to show up and do the work. only followers listen to the net geniuses. Including me.leaders make up their own minds by getting dirty.

Krav is a great commercially available reality system. Its not about sport or being fair. Its about the street. Old outta shape guys and gals working thjeir butts off to be street capable should be appluade. . UFC type classes are excellent but are not about the street because they don’t take into the consideration of multiples, weapons or many other realities of the street such as ambush. When you look at what system is right fror you, you have to look at your reasons for showing up. A street system should work against resisting opponents in a safe manner and deal with street attacks not ring or complicated patterns. Krav does this extremely well. There is a reason so many LEO agencies use this system

Hope this helps and you find what your looking for

    Interesting thread.

La Rev – great post. Thanks for those stories. That’s the stuff that keeps me focused on reality-based training.

As Ryan said, Imi was tasked with teaching everyone in an entire country to be able to defend themselves. Technique had to be used to defeat strength. That’s another thing that I love about KM.

Good luck to you, ab0rt. Please keep us informed about your training.

I did not read posts follow the initial post so you are welcome to scold me if I repeat something someone else said.

An axiom of any fighting art would be that quality comes from the student not the art. Krav Maga is good because of the student quality. The praise for the art comes mostly from the methods used to turn a blob of a person into a skilled practitioner.

Any martial art you encounter is going to be good. Your local schools should have the biggest influence to your training needs. Are they serious? Are the instructors hard on the skilled students and devoting a majority of time to the lesser degrees?

I would look for these things in a Krav Maga school. Such as, are the instructors teaching the students to channel their agression into their attacks. Teaching the mentality to defend and attack? Are the students running their damn mouths during class?

Oh, one last boring point before I zip off. The exercise comment that we get all the time…. More than just your fist or your foot is used to attack. The body and mind must work as hard as your fist. For some reason our exercises are used against us in these stupid martial arts debates and I have no idea why. Its like having a conditioned body is no longer a requirement?!?! Getting told that Krav Maga is just a glorified exercise class by the office black belt than cannot go up the stairs without getting winded is getting old. Nothing against you bud….just timing. Had another day of Mr. Tai Chi telling me that I am wasting my time

I train at the Owings Mills facility and at the Columiba facility in MD. Jeff Mount was the GM for OM now he is the Director of Ops for Both locations. Jeanine Jackson is now the GM at OM. Ask anyone from the National Training Center in LA about Jeanine since that is where she came from. Jeanine is beyond awesome! Jeff has a bit of a rep. to be an amazing teacher and MA to say the least.

I am leaving for Phase A on Friday (10/31) with 3 other Instructor trainee’s.

If you have any questions I’ll be glad to help as much as possible. Just PM me.

To quote Glenn Beck, “Here’s what I know”:

    • We are saving lives on a daily basis.
    • I have yet to build a champion cage fighter, although we do have some good contenders in the mix in our Fight program
    • We teach people to defend themselves against all kinds of attacks, armed or not.

“This is how I got there”:

    • Tonight, a student told me he was accosted in New York last week, his wife yelled at the guy that he trains in Krav Maga and believe it or not the would be attacker put his hands up and left
    • 5 days ago a rape victim who’s been training with us for 3 months boldly told me it will never, ever happen to her again.
    • 3 months ago a smallish female Deputy working detention is escorting a largish newb into his cell. As she uncuffs him, he turns and swings on her. She instinctively blocks and happens to throw a simultaneous counter punch, which distracts him long enough for her to slam a few knees to the groin thereby dropping him in his cell, and she shuts the cage. She had a single 3-hour in-service course in Krav Maga several weeks earlier.
    • 3 weeks ago, a Level 1 KM student is attacked and sucker punched 3 times in a row and hits the deck. He fights his way back to his feet because all he could here in his head above the ringing bells is his instructors and fellow KM practitioners yelling “YOU WILL NOT LOOSE! YOU HAVE TO GO HOME TO YOUR KIDS! YOU CAN’T QUIT!” He gets up and kicks the guy in the groin followed by elbows to the head. He regains the upper hand and holds off the attacker until the police show up.

I, and others here, could go on and on and on and on. IKMF or KMW, you will be learning Krav Maga from Imi and more importantly, get evolved training as it pertains to your country’s current crime trends. It may not be packaged the same, but it’s Krav Maga nonetheless.

    good stuff James.

I think i’m going to add the yelling of “”YOU WILL NOT LOOSE! YOU HAVE TO GO HOME TO YOUR KIDS! YOU CAN’T QUIT!” into my next drill.

    Re: Krav maga getting bashed?

I hate when MMA “posers” try and rip on other arts. Just because you train at a fancy gym with cool T-shirts doesn’t mean you’re a badass. A Tapout shirt doesn’t make you tough. Watching UFC religiously doesn’t make you tough.

It’s usually these guys who rip on other arts.

Krav is not a “Competition”. It give you the tools to save your life. It doesn’t matter whether your big…small…male…female. The techniques are proven and they are what you make them.

While the MMA “posers” are attempting flying armbars, we are pulling their balls off and gouging their eyes out!

    Re: Krav maga getting bashed?

Great comments James thank you for sharing them.

I will also add that in addition to the techniques being applicable in todays increasingly volatile world its HOW they are taught based on the original principles as set down by Imi that is also a critical part of the Krav Maga experience.

The transfer of knowledge and how the instructors actually instruct so that students retain it is crucial and imho unique and extremely valuable.

    Thats my .02 worth

    quote ab0rt_missi0n:

I’m really looking for something to teach me how to truly defend myself in a real life situation. The areas I have to go to all the time are getting worse and worse, and I want to be able to win in a street fight and neutralize threats quickly.

I’ve never done martial arts and I’ve talked to a lot of people in the field all of them saying Krav maga is NOT the way to go for this unless it is taught by the IDF.

    What are your thoughts?

    <— New here.

I was looking for the same thing when I started KM, and I only have a few months experience. Nothing fancy or flighty, just down and dirty get-out-alive stuff.

I learned more in three months of Krav Maga training than I did in 5 years of MCMAP (Marine Corps).

Then when I went back into the Marines, I was able to use some of the ground fighting I had learned in THREE MONTHS of KM training and whoop on my MCMAP instructors.

The stuff works– you get out of it what you put into it.

    Re: Krav maga getting bashed?

I just wanted to add my humble opinion to “CJ’s Dad” comment (and I do enjoy all of his posts as being concise and on-point).

I’ve trained in a variety of TMA’s over the years with very athletic instructors. I train at Chino Hills but have trained at other facilities while traveling in the U.S. What I like about Krav Maga’s focus is that the instructors uniformly teach the student what they can do, not what the instructor can do. I’ve seen too many instructors teaching the double-spinning axe kick of death because they can execute it at will — but few can. It’s unhelpful and discouraging for a student to try and learn what the instructor can do…the student must learn what they can do. Krav appears to follow this simple concept quite well. As I learned in the military (and has been repeated on this forum many times), you fight as you train.
