I started with Okinawan Kempo (9 years), then Taekwondo (3 years), then Ninjutsu (1+ current) and finally Krav (4 whole classes so far). The Kempo was closest to what I have done so far in Krav and although it is a traditional art, the Kata with and without weapons really helped to teach me to focus. Now they are a great way to relax after a bad day at work. If presented with a situation where I have to use one of the above, my brain is still wired to react with Kempo….probably because of the Kata.

Keys? They worked great for me. I was jumped by a potential rapist in a local parking lot and used the keys to open the car door, which I promptly slammed into his head 3 or 4 times after downing him with a knee.
I love keys…
But seriously, as a weapon they are not a great choice for an untrained woman. Neither is a kubaton. I’ve found that teaching untrained women a few things that really work that don’t require props is the best way to go.
