Re: How long does it take for body to acclimate to grueling workouts?

In terms of hydration, I’ve had better results with recovery if I pre-hydrate (i.e., drink a fair amount of water before class, rather than after). Generally speaking, if you wait until you’re thirsty then you’re already dehydrated.

I second the point about drinking/eating recovery food as soon as possible after workout. I drink a monster milk religiously after every class. I’m no nutrition scientist, but it seems intuitively right that getting protein and other healthy recovery materials into your system ASAP can only help.

Finally, I think the recovery period slows with the more training you do. It seems like most folks in this thread are mixing in KM with weight training. I gave up weight training when I started KM. Now I train Krav 4 times a week, often for 2hr at a time, and I don’t feel that I’ve lost any strength. Our classes feature lots of plyometric exercises, which are a different but also effective way to build or at least maintain muscle, and by focusing more on KM I’ve been able to develop my skill set by doing more reps. Just a personal preference, of course.

I think the fight store on Lake Ave had plans to hold Tuesday night classes, but not 100% sure. And I guess there’s a new KM place in Burbank!

Yep, here’s the place in Burbank:

Looks like a solid place, everyone’s certified by KMAA, but the problem for me is that there are only four classes a week, at times that are basically foreclosed by my work schedule. The big appeal of KMW for me is that I can go just about anytime.

No clue about whether the fight store on Lake has classes though. Anyone know about that for certain?

    Re: Pasadena, California

I’d like to second the question. I live in Pas and drive to KMW in Sherman Oaks. I love KM so much I don’t even mind the commute despite it being pretty gnarly on the 134/101 lots of the time, but I’d love for there to be a KMW facility closer to home.

And I don’t think it’s just about Pasadena–if there were a location more accessible to east side LA, I bet lots of people would be interested. That could be Silver Lake, DTLA, Pas, whatever.

Anyone else on the east side interested in KMW expanding their operations out here? Seems like a win-win. More access for those of us who live out here, and a good business opportunity by making KM accessible to a greater part of the LA population.

Re: What did you do in Krav Maga class today?

Some heel strikes and hammerfists, but mainly:

Choke from the side, choke from the front.

I saw that this was really all that was planned for today on the KMWW website (btw, whoever thought of posting daily curriculum, great idea):

    http://kmwtrainingcenters.com/2011/11/27/krav-maga-curriculum-monday-112811/

And I thought it was kind of weird–usually there’s a lot more variety in the coverage. But actually it turned out to be awesome, because it gave me a chance to work on the same basic technique, with a few variations, over and over again and improve it, at least incrementally, instead of rushing through lots of techniques and not really focusing in on any of them. I actually always thought my plucks, well, sucked, and after today I think they suck a little less because I was able to do choke defenses about 30 times and refine the little details that I’d been screwing up for quite a while.

(It also helped that it was just me and one other student in the early-as-hell class class. The suckiness of getting up at 5.30am to hoof it across the LA area to get to an underpopulated 7am class is well worth the individualized attention you get.)

Anyway, if any instructors are reading, one possible take-away is that at level 1 at least it may be better to focus on one technique for longer rather than running through many different techniques in the same class. Quality >> quantity and all that.

    Re: KM injury–hyperextended toe

Good tips, guys, thanks for the info. I think the problem is not the shoes, but that my form/stance sucks and this screwed up my toe.

    Re: KM injury–hyperextended toe

    quote jjbklb:

I have the exact same injury but with the next toe in.It occurred during BJJ class.
I was doing the class in bare feet.By the end of each subsequent class,my toe would swell up & wake me up at night.

I had to go back to wearing shoes during class. Now,no swelling.I think that I’ll go another month before trying shoeless workouts again.

Interesting–I got this injury despite wearing shoes, which is kind of a problem. What shoe do you wear during training? Is there a particular kind of shoe recommended for KM?
