Re: Great instincts by this woman

Great to hear this woman successfully fought off this creep and took his wallet!
It’s a shame she didn’t have a chance to strangle the life out of him before he could get away.

Thanks for posting, I’m always glad to hear some good news.

    Re: Front kick pivoting

    Here’s a trick I use:

From your fighting stance, gently bounce on the balls of your feet: loosen up. Then kick. For me, this bouncing helps me my weight distribution. Remember, you want your weight on the balls of your feet so you can move faster and more smoothly. I suspect that the reason your base foot feels cemented is because you are letting all of your weight fall on the heel. If that’s the case, you will be stuck!

So just before you kick, bounce a little on the balls of your feet, and then try kicking with the slight pivot. Nevertheless, don’t sweat it. I’m confident that it will come.

Re: Car defense: I have no idea

I’m know I’m late coming into the game, but I wanted to throw some spaghetti and see what sticks.

I lived in a large-ish city for years (Louisville, KY), and I often thought about the issues you’re discussing Zombie. One time I was sitting in my car, waiting for a traffic light, when the guy in front of me got out of his truck and start coming towards me. I panicked! Turned out all he wanted was directions to a local McDonalds, but I always wondered what if he wanted more?

Assuming a similar situation as you descried Zombie, I would follow a plan like this:

    1) My car doors are locked – ALWAYS. Even if I’m in somebody else’s car. This may seem obvious, but it’s the first layer of defense for me.
Years ago a family member stopped at an intersection when a man appeared from no-where and tried to open the passenger-side door. Thankfully, she had her door locked, and she was able to bolt out of there safely.

    2) My windows go up whenever someone is too close. Obviously this prevents someone from reaching in, but also it gives a thin layer of protection if some fool tries to punch/attack me. I know the glass won’t do much to protect me, but hopefully it will give me precious seconds to react when it really counts.

    3) Assuming the person is irate with me over something, it will always be “Mea Culpa” whether it’s my fault or not. Nobody likes to be yelled at or called a p****, but I’d rather just swallow my pride than escalate a situation.

    4) If my hypothetical nutcase won’t take “I’m sorry” as sufficient, I’m calling 911. Presuming this person hasn’t lost it completely and is just a hot head, most people don’t want the cops coming. Also, if this escalates further, and eventually I’m defending myself in a criminal or civil court, I want a 911 tape with me saying, “Man, I’m sorry! Please let me go on.”

    5) Pepper spray. I’m still weighing the wisdom of this for obvious reasons, but I’m thinking that if necessary I could roll my window down enough to spray him good. Nowadays you can buy spray that mists, foams, jets, etc. Using the kind that streams out might cut down on accidentally discharging my car, and burning myself up.

    6) If the person produces a weapon of any kind, I’m going to do my best to take off. If this means I accidentally strike him with my vehicle, or hit another car.

    7) Finally, getting out of my car would be a last and very tactical choice. Getting out of your car seems to immediately escalate the situation, no matter if you’re offering free puppies and juice. This also puts you in danger from other passing motorists as well as leaving you (comparatively) more exposed to danger from the other person. I never want to under-estimate what other drivers are carrying.
Back in 2008 not far from me in Louisville, a guy on a motorcycle got shot by a woman in a fit of road rage when he got fed up with her tail-gating him, and he stopped to ask her what her problem was. He survived, and she’s in prison. (http://www.wlky.com/r/16645273/detail.html) I suspect that if he’d not approached her, she wouldn’t have shot him.
That said, I realize there are situations where exiting the vehicle and confronting the other person.

I know this is a long post, but I wanted to try to give a thought-out response to your situation.

Let me know if I’m totally out of my head.

    Re: Using Focus Mitts

One last question, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced set of mitts for a beginner to buy?

    Thanks!

    Re: Stretching DVD?

Thanks for the great advice, I appreciate it!

    On a slightly related note,

    quote vwr32:

What was the topic again? lol… oh yeah. Stretching dvd. I’d go for the free stuff first and save the money for stuff like the Bas Rutten CDs. thumbsup

Um, erm, *cough*, who is Bas Rutten and why does everyone recommend his CDs?
