There is synergy in self-defense and fitness training at Krav Maga Worldwide. The two go hand in hand. We’ve designed our programs that way. It’s in our mission statement. We work to empower every person with real skills to be safer and stronger.
Every Krav Maga Worldwide certified training center understands the importance of self-defense and fitness as complimentary components. Self-defense training, taking Krav Maga classes, and working through the Krav Maga belt levels teaches you how to defend yourself. It gives you the skills you need to fight back, win, and go home safe.
Fitness classes like heavy bag classes, strength and conditioning classes, yoga, mobility, endurance are all ways that you can make your body the best possible tool for executing the skills you learn. You want your body to be able to perform at its best when it matters most.
Your body IS a machine.
You’ve probably heard this before. Comparisons that associate your body with a car or a computer, etc. It’s true. Your body is an organism with multiple different systems functioning and working at the same time. Like a machine.
Some systems are automatic, involuntary, or “autonomic” like breathing, circulation, and digestion. Other systems are voluntary or “somatic”, and these are mainly responsible for your movement
All of the systems in your body get taxed when you are under stress or when you are exerting effort. They can all basically be trained to respond to stress and activity. That training takes practice and repetition.
Your body can and will learn to get stronger, move faster, adapt to stress, and recover quickly by training at Krav Maga Worldwide. Taking self-defense classes at Krav Maga Worldwide pushes your body to different levels of performance, ultimately teaching it to adapt.
YOU run YOUR machine.
Your body will make these kinds of adaptations under many different circumstances. You should be choosing the avenues that are best for your health and happiness. Learning for your body is going to depend on your interests, goals, and commitments. This means that there is a mental element involved in teaching your body and developing it to perform. You program your machine and teach it based on your interests and goals.
If you want to be great at, let’s say, playing the piano, you have to study, learn, then apply your skills in practice. Learning to play the piano completely on your own, without a book or a teacher would be an incredible difficult task.
If you want to learn the best way to defend yourself against real world threats and dangers you should be taking self-defense classes at Krav Maga Worldwide. Self-defense training at Krav Maga Worldwide is based on a system that was specifically designed to be easy to learn and to understand.
Krav Maga is a system. Not an art.
Krav Maga’s was developed for military purposes. At the end of WWII the creator of Krav Maga, Imi Lichtenfeld, was tasked with training people who had no hand-to-hand combat experience to become soldiers who would be capable of defending the newly formed nation of Israel.
Imi knew that making people capable, as fast as possible, meant simplicity not ceremony. He developed Krav Maga self-defense training to get results. That meant the exclusion of things like ceremony, performance, demonstration, and rules.
Self-defense classes and fight classes at Krav Maga Worldwide teach people a no-holds-barred system. There are no rules on the battlefield. There are no rules in an assault on the streets. Krav Maga classes teach people to fight for survival, not for sport.
We teach students to use techniques like groin strikes, throat strikes, strikes to the back of the head, eye gouges, etc. These techniques are considered “illegal” or a “foul” in competitive sport fighting.
Self-defense and fitness.
Taking self-defense classes at Krav Maga Worldwide will change your body and make it stronger. It will help you build muscle and get leaner. Your endurance levels will increase. There will be changes in your body’s level of flexibility. All of these things are benefits to your overall level of health and wellness.
One of the things that Imi knew about teaching people to learn to fight in a very short period of time was that training had to be intense. Krav Maga is designed to be easy to learn and easy to recall under stress. Therefore, your body has to experience stress during training.
Krav Maga classes teach you techniques and how to apply them. Your mind learns and your body learns. The application of techniques in training at every Krav Maga belt level requires a great deal of effort. Your body responds to stress and the physical demands of put on it in self-defense classes by getting stronger.
Fitness and self-defense.
The reality is that the intensity of Krav Maga classes and learning to fight at Krav Maga Worldwide can take a toll on your body. We do difficult things in Krav Maga classes. Safety is foremost at all of our training centers but there are always new challenges in training.
If you take a class that focuses on punch defenses and counterattacking, your arms and shoulders might get a little banged up. Classes that focus on ground fighting will stress all of your muscles because of the way weight and pressure are distributed with someone on top of you or when you’re trying to control someone underneath you.
There are times when focusing on non-contact training is going to be the overall best thing for your body, a.k.a. your machine. Taking fitness focused classes like KM Bag class, or strength training, will still allow you to work toward the goal of making your body the best possible tool for self-defense. If your focus remains on getting safer AND stronger you will continue to make progress.
Consistency is the best.
If we think about consistency from the standpoint of fitness first, the consistent effort you put in will get you the fastest results in terms of your overall health. Regular training in either self-defense classes or fitness classes, let’s say 4 days a week, is going to have your body using calories and making positive changes like building muscle and burning fat.
Overall, that’s a really active lifestyle that is much better than just taking a step class or bootcamp class every once in a while. If you’re getting this kind of activity from self-defense and fitness classes, it’s a win-win.
In terms of self-defense training, consistency is an irreplaceable element in being successful and progressing. Whether your goal is just to be safer than you were yesterday, or it’s to become a Krav Maga black belt, training consistently is going to get you there.
There’s no substitute for hard work in self-defense training, honestly. You really have to stay committed and train consistently in order to master all of the techniques in each Krav Maga belt level and to move on to the next level.
What’s crucial however is that you are consistent in showing up and putting in the work. The work in self-defense classes is going to reinforce your understanding of techniques, as well as recognition of potentially dangerous situations. That’s called situational awareness.
Hard work for your body in self-defense classes is also going to translate into activity and how you are building your machine. It’s going to benefit your body in the same way. That’s a win-win, too.
Krav Maga Worldwide training can get you there.
