No, akebono didn’t lose because he couldn’t take a punch. He lost because he couldn’t fight well standing or on the ground. But in my book, there’s no shame in losing to Royce Gracie. I wish I could say I lost to him.
Sumo wrestlers in all those cases didn’t seem to be conditioned to take a punch, though. Especially in the Mark Hall vs Koji Kitao fight- he quit after being hit in the nose once.
