Re: Vertical punches??
I know this is an old thread but after reading through it I had a quick look online for more thoughts on the topic so then I know which way is best to practice. This guy does seem to give a good explanation of why a vertical punch seems to be better; granted it’s not Krav Maga but you might find it quite interesting all the same his reasoning about it:

quote KevinMack:What is with this growing trend of KMWW instructors teaching people to punch with vertical fists? I have seen this more and more over the past few years? Whats the deal?No boxing gloves in krav maga so you can’t just take the same ideas you see in boxing. If you throw a horizontal punch to the head, your arm/wrist structure is weaker as you can see here

well..the KM straight punch isnt 100% horizontal….it is rotated with the first knuckle serving as a sight like a gun. You are making first contact with the first two knuckles but you are rotating the fist. It is not a vertical punch but it is also not an overly rotated horizontal punch with the 3rd knuckle making first contact.
I show this in my video that I posted.November 30, 2012 at 9:08 am #86256kevinmackMemberRe: Vertical punches??
Also..I am not trying to come off as a tough guy or anything but do to certain lifestyle choices I probably punched people hundreds of times bare knuckle. I was not a highly trained fighter and most of these fights were either one on one, group fights and even some riots. Most of these punches were wild so they hit faces, skulls and limbs yet I never broke a hand, finger or wrist. Not even a sprain. Not saying the risk isnt there but I dont think its as likely as the proponents of vertical punching say it is.

All good points. Excellent topic. Sort of like a pitcher in baseball you dont change arm angle??
I tend to naturally punch sort of 45 degrees.

Eyal is a proponent of the 45 degree fist. His reasoning is structure and the alignment of the first two knuckles. I know there are opinions with the same reasoning for vertical and horizontal although I was always taught the reason for horizontal was for torque, snap and reach and best with gloves.
I did ask my KM instructor about this and he answered “they all hurt” and “ask your attacker which he prefers”

I show this in my video that I posted.yeah Sambrano did demonstrate the 45 as a solid punch at around 1:30 in the video that I posted.

Oh Wow !!! :banghead:
Y’all are totally missing the big picture.
Anytime you are going to punch or chin jab someone.
Your footwork acts as an extending & retracting stick as you move across the floor throwing your body behind the punch.
Footwork , Footwork and Footwork. thumbsup
Keep your elbows relaxed and clench your fists at the last second punching hard.

I think it will help if fellow Krav Maga practicers understood how a punch works on vital organs.
