Re: Where can I find a list of KM black belts

    quote BrentW:

I miss you guys too. Maybe I can arrest you in Santa Monica sometime. 🙂
Oh yeah, if you touch my diploma again th.t won’t be a joke!!

I talked to Christian, he said it was fun fighting the only 2 guys shorter than him. Something about raining down destruction on a krav smurf and a guy who doesn’t speak english.

Err, I think it was the 2 guys smacking me around. But hey, no judo flips for me. A couple of things I do remember (in addition to the liver shot) was during one of my 1:1 sessions with Marcus he did try to axe kick me while I was on the ground. Actually, that happened right after he went for his spinning backfist from a standing position to me while I was on the ground.

    I love these guys!

    Ha ha ha! Congratulations, Christian!

Must you protect the liver even when taking photos?

LOL. Dude – you’re killing me! See you’ve made me subconsciously protect my liver. 🙂

    quote La Revancha:

Phack, man! I thought you knew!

I spoke to some black belts tonight who taught that morning. Even THEY didn’t know about it.

We coulda used you though. It was only Marcus and I (which was a load of fun). Kelly was not amused at our greco and judo shenanigans.

Sadly, only one liver shot to report, sir. They actually told me to cut it out…..how we miss you, Brent 🙁

Err, Yeah, I think I was the recipient of that liver shot from the test. Ahh, such a fond memory for my liver. 🙂

Btw, I actually enjoyed the greco and judo shenanigans. Of course, I wasn’t the recipient of that. 😛

    Re: Great Martial Arts Book

One of my favorite martial arts book recommendations is “Zen in the Martial Arts” by Joe Hyams. The passages are short but very insightful. Also, if you like Bruce Lee and his philosopies, there are several examples throughout the book.

Re: Phase A vs Apprentice A certification

Ryan did a great job of summing up the Apprentice Program. Thanks Ryan! As an Instructor who went through the Apprentice Program (started it in late 2005) I’d recommend a few things. First, be a student for a while. I’m not sure what the requirement is but when I started the Apprentice Program I was already a student Blue Belt. Second, do a lot of assisting. The experience is really great and it helps to get feedback from your fellow Instructors. For me, having those experiences I believe really helped prepare me. However, don’t be fooled, the trainings for certification are grueling but fun! Did I mention grueling? 🙂 Also, for the Apprentice Program for Phase A (yellow) and Phase B (orange) are shortened as they are 3 days. When you do your Phase C (green) you will still do the full week of training. Now, you can tell from Ryan’s description, it is very true that you should have done a lot of work prior even to be considered for the Apprentice Program as they expect you to already know the material really well. Regardless of whether you do the Apprentice Program or not, becoming a Krav Maga Instructor is surely one of the highlights of my life. I have a full time job that I enjoy outside of Krav but always look forward to coming in and teaching the students. It is a reward that is well worth the investment. Good luck with your continued training and interest in Krav Maga!

    Cheers, Christian

Re: Bad punch/kick form ok in Krav?

Thanks Mara_Jade. I don’t get the opportunity to read the forum as much as I’d like but it is surely a great place to ask questions and gain insight. Where else can you ask a question and have so many people from so many different places around the world want to reply because of their passion for Krav. It’s a beautiful thing! 🙂

Re: Bad punch/kick form ok in Krav?

Hello Audall (and others). 🙂 Thank you for your post. I am one of the instructors at Krav Maga San Francisco. I do not frequently teach the level I classes but here’s what I like to stress to my students and may answer some of your questions:

From my point of view, technique is very important. Especially in the beginning level classes and ever more so in the intermediate and advanced level classes. Regarding punching, I like to make sure that there is proper hip and shoulder rotation throughout the strike. We tend to stress more of the vertical fist. One of the reasons is that for those who are just learning to strike they may tend to lead and then strike with the wrong knuckles (i.e. the last 2 instead of the first 2) which could result in a common boxer injury. Also, when punching with a horizontal fist, this tends to also raise the elbow which exposes the side of the body. In addition, learning this way will develop a habit that will have to be unlearned later in order to better perform a higher level attack/defense technique.

Some other pointers would be to make sure the hands are up, chin is down, elbows are in, shoulders over hips, striking through the target, etc.

Also, some students will take longer to learn a technique properly. So, for those with previous training, it is usually much easier to spot in others that which we have already trained ourselves correctly. However, it is the responsibility of the instructor to instruct the student properly.

As for teaching a gun disarm in a level 1 class, this is not something I would do unless there was some context I was trying to stress regarding the technique. For example, I have at times demonstrated the importance of the technique for a 360 defense by demonstrating with an attacker with a knife. However, this is not how I would start the instruction. So, to stress, I would not start out with a weapon as part of the initial instruction but may demonstrate later to emphasize the importance of the technique.

Also, I would echo a comment made previously: mention it to an instructor. He/She will not fix what they are not aware needs to be fixing. I will make sure the other instructors at the school are aware.

Please feel to introduce yourself to me. 🙂 If I’m not teaching, I’m usually training there a lot. 🙂

Again, thanks for the post and keep on training!

    Cheers, Instructor Christian

    Re: Km2u 4/13 NTC SO

Hi Everyone! It was great training with all of you. I thought the workshop was fantastic and I look forward to the next scheduled training event (Summer camp?)! Of course, my legs don’t necessarily have the same opinion as they are still reminding me of the warm ups from both Tamara and Jarret. They felt especially good the next night during the round kick absorption drill in class. 🙂

See you also soon and thanks again for a great workshop. Don’t forget to fill out the surveys that Karla sent out!

Kudos to Jarret and all for putting on such a great workshop!

    Cheers, Christian

I agree. The instructors were great as usual and I was extremely pleased with the all of my fellow Phasers. This has been the best class I have tested with so far. Thank you all for your hard work and especially your enthusiasm. Cheers to all of you.

    Christian
