Re: KM in a real situation?

This may sound crazy, and I wouldn’t recommend it, but it really is a testament to the efficacy of Krav Maga. I actually had to use a KM gun disarm while deployed, before ever taking a real Krav class. I purchased the KMW videos back in 2002, and trained the techniques on my own and with my soldiers for a few months prior to deployment. Basically all we had to go by were the tapes and several drills that John Whitman emailed to me.

Having some background in self defense and really focusing on the fine points of the techniques (and realizing some additional points that weren’t covered in the video, as they are not meant as an end-all-be-all), we were able to become “somewhat” proficient.

Bottom line, the technique was executed, bad guy disarmed, no soldiers or civilians who were being threatened were injured, and thankfully the gun did not discharge, as there were several people in the immediate vicinity.

At that point, I became a believer.

Make no mistake, I had a lot that needed fixing when I started actual Krav classes, but trust me, it is worth it to continue training.

    Good luck!

    Re: Second Amendment Defense

My latest toy is a Stag Arms 2TL on order since 12/4 and it looks like it will be another month before it will ship… I’m a left-handed shooter that has been using right-handed M4s my whole career, but now with the lefty, no more powder and brass flying in my face, I can’t wait!!

Also, I let my NRA membership lapse for the last two years…just renewed it last week. I figured now was a good time to do so…

    Kirsten,

You got me pegged…playing my banjo, filling the front porch spittoon, and fantasizing that any minute federal agents are gonna show up to conduct an unlawful search of my domicile. Let ’em come, Ole’ Bess is here under the table jus’ waitin’ for ’em…I’ll show them my “US gun ownership mentality”.

    Mara Jade,

Thanks, you have no idea how much self-restraint I am exercising right now–(I too have a Poli Sci degree and am predisposed to heated debate). I guess this type of discussion is why I lurked for six years or so before rejoining the forum…

    Re: Second Amendment Defense

As I sit here in my double-wide, laid-off as an unskilled worker in the local coal mines, I don’t even have the money to get the ’83 Camaro on blocks in my front yard fixed so that I can go meet Mama when she gets out of the joint tomorrow. Bitterly clinging to my guns, religion, and my antipathy for those not like me is the only thing that gets me through these troubled, troubled times in the Deep South. That and the Tuesday night militia meetings…

Re: Hello — Newb in Phoenix & advice wanted.

    Don,

Since you have at least two months to ramp up, any work you do on your general fitness will serve you well. Most people who show up to their first Krav Maga class are surprised at how physically challenging it is–(that’s also part of why students bond very quickly–you know, everyone sucking wind together, kinda like the Army).

I agree with Kirsten–you should ease into any routine. I recommend starting with things you are familiar with (i.e. good old Army PT: Push ups, sit ups, running, flutter kicks, deep knee benders, etc.) then eventually add some fighting-focused movements. The Bas Rutten workout CD set is an excellent resource to get you physically up to speed for Krav classes, as is Crossfit. Both of these are discussed at length in other threads.

Good luck with your preparation–Krav is a blast!!

    Hope this helps…

Re: I kinda used my krav today

    quote Jenn:

I just have to say THANK YOU to my Krav instructors. 2 years ago I would have cowered and given this guy my money and felt bad for him and his situation. Today I’m just pissed he touched me and that I didn’t hit him and that I was aware of my surroundings.

Good job keeping your wits about you. This alone can be the biggest benefit Krav provides–lose your head, lose the fight.

    Glad to hear you’re safe.

Re: New and improved collar… now with three stripes!!

    Sgt Johnson,

Congrats on your promotion. NCOs truly are the backbone of the military.

I noticed your location, I spent a couple of weeks up there recently at the IKMA headquarters. Not sure if I ran into you there.

Coincidentally, the responsibility of “meat gazer”, or “pecker checker” also falls under E-5’s at Fort Bragg as well. That’s an awesome detail. People who aren’t familiar with the military’s way of urinalysis might find it odd/creepy. When I left active duty a couple of years ago, I had to take a urinalysis for my new job. I went to the bathroom, held the cup and waited with the door open for the lady to come in and observe…she said, “Sir, you may close the door now”, and I replied, “Oh, I thought you had to watch”…she looked at me like a total freak and said, “Hell no, I’d totally get sued for that!”

Just one of the few “transitions” into civilian life that didn’t go so smoothly…Who knew?:dunno:

    Re: H.a.s.h.i.t.a

This doesn’t really come across to me as a “KM Knockoff” per se, as Krav is never really mentioned or even alluded to. Maybe the “Israeli fighting method” description may lead someone to think Krav, but the founder appears to have a significant history with Dennis Hanover from Hisardut, a well-established Israeli martial art (just ask Amir Perets).

This just has the feel of some guy with possibly some legitimate security/TMA credentials marketing his own spin on self-defense.

    Some initial thoughts:

    1) Unfortunately named system for the English-speaking world
    2) I just spotted Derek Zoolander’s “Magnum look” in the gallery
    3) If I had to evaluate on just the videos, it’s not my cup of tea but I wish these folks well…
