Go see an orthopedist. He/she can examine you and pretty much tell if it is a torn ligament. Naturally an MRI will reveal the extent of the damage. Unfortunatley if it is an ACL and you choose surgery, say goodbye to KM for a while.

I was out for almost 10 months due to knee surgery. Thought I was going to drop dead when I came back. I’m slowly getting my cardio back, the skills seem to be almost 100% ( at least that what my instructor and playmates say). I did put some weight on so that is not so pretty. My punches, blocks, ground work etc all seem back to BS (before surgery). My kicks are not as solid as I would like them to be. Not as fast. I wear a brace so that might be a factor. I’m happy to be where I am though. Stick it out.

Speaking of forearm guards a guy I train with found these great guards at warrior-one.com. Very thick, and they cover about 3/4 of your forearm. Almost everyone in the school switched to these. Just my 2 cents.

I had ACL surgery in August of last year. The doctor cleared me to go back after four months, but my knee was still very sore. I waited another three months to go back. I wear a brace(Townsend) and that helps a lot. I also went through about five months of PT, three and then two days a week plus doing exercises at home. If I didn’t do KM I would never have gotten the surgery. I found that the lateral movements are ones that hurt the most. I still can’t kneel on it without some pain. Other than that the most hardest thing is getting my endurance back. I can do squats, and jumpsquats. We’ve had a lot of rain where I live lately and that is murder on the knee. Think long and hard before you have the surgery. It’s good to be back to KM though.

I’ll ask the obvious; have you seen a physician? I thought I dislocated my knee, turned out to be an ACL and meniscus. Didn’t show up on x-ray, only MRI. Didn’t even hurt. If that is ruled out, continue with the PT.

With only 7 classes under your belt I would worry more about my technique rather than my power. If you practice, the power will develop over time. I like to do strenght training, another aerobic activity(bking in my case) and a healthly dose of the Bas Rutten tapes.

There are a dozens of sites on the net to figure out how many calories you need to; lose weight, gain weight or maintain your weight. I strive for a balance of 40% LEAN protein (chicken leans meats, fish), 40% clean carbs (whole fruits, vegetables, lots of oatmeal and severely limited processed foods), and the balance of fat (nuts, olive oil, etc). I periodically track my diet to see how Iím doing. It works for me. Everyone is different. I avoid high fructose corn syrup and transfats. I think that they are poison and the reason for obesity in America. Before KM I eat very light; whole grain toast, tuna cottage cheese. After a workout, Iíll have a bowl of oatmeal. Iím 51, and in the best shape of my life. Again check out the web to find about diets, good fats, glycemic index. Youíll find something that works for you.

Very nice, fast too. I have a G5 Mac, OS X and digital cable, it started streaming immediately and the entire clip loaded in exactly 30 seconds. Good work!!! 😀

The two schools that I have attended have been very accomidating towards people with various disabilities. The cool thing about KM is that you can work on your strengths. It is very positive. Where I currently attend, sparring is strictly optional. Yes, there is contact, but you must remember that it is a contact sport. Don’t be afraid to talk to your instructor about your disabilites. A good one will work with you, not against you. I wish you well.

If a knife or gun is out of the question, consider an ASP expandable baton. Smack someone with that, you are sure to ruin their day. Hopefully your KM training is giving you more confidence. Confidence will make you look like a less than desirable target. The thugs and creeps don’t want someone who looks like they won’t be an easy mark. I know it is easy for me to sit in the suburbs and say move, but your life is definitely worth more than a couple of grand. I wish you well.
