I agree with both sides…. if that is possible.
If both guys have equal training, then yes… big guy definately has the advantage.
However, I feel that a well trained little guy will do very well against a poorly trained big guy.
April 17, 2006 at 10:40 am #46182karlhungusMemberExactly. If your friend is fine with you kicking him in the groin and repeatedly punching him in the face, then Krav would be great for your situation. However, I suspect that he may object to that. So you may want to look into some Mui Thai lessons of your own, or BJJ as was stated earlier.

But honestly, what you are doing will have you in fine shape.

February 21, 2006 at 12:34 pm #44898karlhungusMemberWhy, yes I do think that Krav Maga is an excellent form of self defense….
February 21, 2006 at 10:37 am #44897karlhungusMemberIf you have a gym on this desert island, check out http://www.crossfit.com and start researching the WoD’s. If you can do crossfit for a year before Krav, you will be in great shape.
If there isn’t a gym…. push ups, sprints, sit ups, squats, burpee’s… etc. Every bodyweight exercise you can think of.
Post more specific details if this situation becomes more than just hypothetical.
February 21, 2006 at 10:26 am #44896karlhungusMemberIt is as demanding as you want to make it. If you can’t handle the drill, you don’t have to press on until you vomit or pass-out….or both 🙂 You can take a breather if you wish. No one will be screaming at you, no one will even look at you funny.
The trick is to push yourself to your limits, everytime. If you do that, every class will be challenging but it will be exactly as much as you can handle. You will see progress quickly and you will be amazed at how quickly you will get into shape.
It is not bootcamp, Krav Instructors are not Drill Instructors. You should contact the school and see if you can get a trial class. Check it out for yourself.

[quote]I don’t care if Darren got his Black Belt from a cracker jack box. I have only been to one training seminar with him and it was amazing. He is hands down the best instructor that I have ever seen in my life. Technique, intensity, and unbelievably motivational. I would train with him anytime.
I am sure that anyone who has trained with him knows what I am talking about.
February 2, 2006 at 7:51 pm #44079karlhungusMemberI think it is an improvement on their previous program, but it still could use some work. Personally, I think that the Marine Corps has a pretty decent H2H program with MCMAP. Same concept as Krav (Taking what they find effective from other MA’s and implementing them in an easy to learn form). Different techniques though. There seems to be more Aikido and grappling than Krav. It is definately a step up from the LINE training that I learned.

Thanks
February 1, 2006 at 8:39 am #43990karlhungusMemberAre you saying you watched a Krav class at your gym that seemed gimmicky, or was it some other class?
I think that you should give Krav a shot, since most studio’s offer a free intro class or 2. It sounds like it is what you are looking for. Don’t think that you are learning MMA or anything though. Remember that it is SELF DEFENSE though.
But as for some of the things you listed:
Defend against multiple attackers – check
Defend against knives – check
Something to keep you in shape as you get older -Definately more physically challenging than most traditional martial arts
Something that isn’t gimmicky – Depends on the person, but for the most part people recognize Krav Maga as a \”practical\” self defense. Most of the people who criticize it have an agenda. Usually loyalty to another MA.
So, go check it out. See what you think and decide for yourself.
January 31, 2006 at 11:25 am #43928karlhungusMemberCool. I would like to see the video of that. Nothing better than seeing someone eat crow. Sounds like you worked him over pretty good.
January 30, 2006 at 6:29 am #43875karlhungusMemberGood luck. Just don’t quit. Make sure that you incourage your partner in the test, keep them motivated and they should do the same for you. It is not so bad.
Diet tip would be to make sure that you drink plenty of water in the days before the test, and the 1/2 gatorade 1/2 water mix the day of.
January 30, 2006 at 6:26 am #43874karlhungusMemberYes… yes it is. 8)
January 29, 2006 at 6:28 am #43832karlhungusMemberI will choke down a Zone Bar and about 32oz of water on my drive to class. So, that is about 45min before class. I have never had any desire to puke in class as a result of this. If I am doing multiple classes in a row, I will try to eat about 1/2 of another Zone Bar between classes, for energy. I only run into problems if I drink too much water between classes. It tends to give me a side-ache.
